Corsicana —
Texas Baptists are collecting “Buckets of Hope” — containers of food for Haitian families affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake that rocked the nation.
Across the state, people can collect buckets of food that will be picked up regionally by Texas Baptist Men and its area directors March 8 and shipped through the Florida Baptist Convention to hurting and hungry people in Haiti.
Locally, Cornerstone Baptist Church at 801 North 13th Street is serving as a collection and distribution point for the effort.
“We kicked it off Sunday and already have six or seven filled buckets ready to go,” said Paul Carter, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church. “We passed out 50 buckets and still had some people wanting one.”
The primary needs identified for Haitians right now is access to clean water and food. Texas Baptist Men is tackling a portion of the water issue, installing water purification systems and will soon be distributing water filters that will provide clean drinking water for a family of four for six months.
The “Buckets of Hope” campaign is a tangible way people can help provide food for hungry Haitians, said Marla Bearden, who leads Texas Baptists’ Church to Church partnership disaster response efforts.
“This is a ministry opportunity churches can really wrap their arms around and do something to help the people of Haiti,” she said. “This gives us a chance to roll up our sleeves and do something for the hurting in Haiti. Each bucket will provide food for one week for a Haitian family.”
The bucket must include specific food items, be packed in a particular manner and include $10 for shipping in order to make sure it quickly passes through customs and is delivered to people affected by the earthquake, Bearden said. Directions for how to put the buckets together can be found at www.texasbaptists.org/bucketsofhope. The buckets can be put together for less than $40 dollars each, including shipping.
Individuals can drop off buckets of hope at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Corsicana from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Carter said.
“We want this to bring hope to the people of Haiti and give them a bit of relief,” Bearden said. “Not only can they eat the food, they can keep the buckets and use them.”
