Corsicana —
What is likely the longest primary campaign in Texas history moves into “home stretch” Monday as early voting for the July 31 Texas Primary runoff election begins.
Early voting in the runoff will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday, July 27, in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse. Eight consolidated polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31 for election day polling.
Challenges to the newly-drawn district lines in Texas delayed the primary vote from March 2 to May 29 — adding nearly three months to the campaign. Then, with one local race and several state races still undecided due to runoffs, another vote is slated July 31 — adding two more months to the campaign.
Voters in Navarro County will be deciding the GOP candidate for Precinct 1 County Commissioner, with Jason Grant and Darrell Shelton vying for the right to face Democratic challenger Harold Tate in November. Kit Herrington, current Precinct 1 commissioner, is not seeking another term in office.
Grant and Shelton were the top vote getters in the May primary election that had four hopefuls on the ballot, but neither candidate garnered 50 percent of the vote, forcing the runoff between the two. Tate was unopposed on the Democratic ballot.
GOP voters will also be asked to settle a runoff for their candidate in the race to fill U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat. Hutchison chose not to seek another term in office.
Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and former Solicitor General Ted Cruz have been locked in an issue filled campaign for the GOP nomination. The campaign has featured multiple “negative ads” by both candidates since the primary season began in January.
Three other state-level runoffs are on the GOP ballot — Christi Craddick and Warren Chisum are in a runoff for the office of Railroad Commissioner; Barry Smitherman and Greg Parker are vying for the GOP nomination for an unexpired term on the Railroad Commission; and John Devine and David Medina are vying for the GOP nomination in the Justice, Supreme Court, Place 4 race.
Democratic voters will have only one race on the ballot — Paul Sadler and Grady Yarbrough are in a runoff seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senator to face off against the winner of the Dewhurst/Cruz race.
Registered voters who voted in their party’s primary election in May can again vote in that party’s primary during the runoff. Registered voters who did not vote in the May primary can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary. However, no “crossover” voting will be allowed in the runoff. Those who voted in the Democratic primary in May can not vote in the Republican runoff; likewise, those who voted in the Republican primary in May cannot vote in the Democratic runoff election.
