Corsicana Back to School/Stay in School Rally will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Fullerton-Garitty Park, 3201 McKnight Lane, for youth of all ages. The rally will enhance students and parents’ knowledge of the education processes and promoting the retention and graduation of all youth. There will be school information booths, motivational speakers, food and drink vendors, give-a-ways, games and activities and more. Buses will arrive at Bowie, Carroll, Drane, Navarro, Sam Houston, Fannin and Travis schools to pick up adults and students at 8:30 a.m. Buses will return you to the school site after noon. Pep Rally in the Park at 6:30 p.m. at Frost City Park. Line Main Street and cheer on the 2009 Frost High School and Frost Junior High School cheerleaders, volleyball players and football players as they parade down Main Street of Frost. Then join them in the park for cheers, introductions, and the opportunity to meet the team. Hot dogs, nachos and drinks will be on sale. Come meet, come mingle, and come eat. Chatfield-Tupelo Community Center will hold its annual ice cream social at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to enter a homemade ice cream to be judged. Please have entries turned in at 5:30 p.m. Cost will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under. If you need a break from the hot summer, please come out and enjoy a refreshing summer treat.

A benefit will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Corsicana YMCA for Larry Houston (husband of Janet Jamison Houston) to help with cancer treatment expenses. There will be a meal, silent auction and entertainment by the Bryan Smith Band.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. A free genealogy workshop will be held at the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, sponsored by the Navarro County Genealogical Society. Leading the workshop will be genealogist, researcher and author Lynna Kay Shuffield. A fall carnival and festival will kick off at 4 p.m. with a parade of old cars and motorcycle riders down Garitty Street in downtown Frost and then displayed for car enthusiasts at Frost City Park. There will be traditional carnival games, arts and crafts booths, and food. The rumor is that Elvis will make an appearance to entertain along with a DJ and dance at dusk. This event will be a major fund-raiser for the Frost Community Center to stock the food pantry and expand its outreach programs. Former Mildred school leader passes
Doug Lane, who was superintendent of schools at Mildred Independent School District for 24 years until retiring in 2011, died Sunday at a hospital in Tyler. He was 70 years old.
