Corsicana — The Corsicana City Council voted to approve the parks master plan Tuesday when it met in regular session. The plan is needed to apply for any Texas park grants.
Under the plan, the city currently has 374 acres of park space, nearly half of which is on Lake Halbert. Including all the open spaces and city entrances maintained by the parks department, the city cares for 464 acres, said Dennis Simms, the parks planner hired by the city.
If the city ever achieves “build-out” of more than 76,000 residents, the city will need to build about 15 more parks, Simms said. He didn’t say when that might be.
In other business, the council took the following actions:
• Approved the sale of the Falk parcel of land for $114,000. The undivided land was donated years ago to the city and sits south of Texas Highway 31, and is accessible by SECR 0040 and SECR 0070. The city received four bids on the land, the highest of which came from Richard Cummins, who bid $1,010 an acre. The other owner of the property bid $400 an acre.
• Did not act on a proposal to sell the city’s part of the county/city property once meant to be a rendering plant. The county has delayed the sale until it can get an outside appraisal. The city got four bids on that property, also, the highest of which was for $1,167 an acre.
• Sold 300 historic street bricks to the City of Kerens to be used to repair a brick street damaged by a utility company. Corsicana will receive $2 per brick. The extra bricks came from a former brick street in Corsicana that was paved over and the bricks salvaged.
• During the public forum Bob O’Toole of First Baptist Church came to say that his church’s efforts to feed people each Monday has resulted in nearly 7,000 meals over the course of the first year, and 3,300 volunteer hours. The church serves free lunches to the hungry on Mondays.
