Corsicana — A listing of meetings and events of interest from throughout Navarro County.

Jan. 16

Navarro County Branch NAACP remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with “A Day of Celebration” which will begin at 10 a.m. with a Rally in Bunert Park. The speaker will be Bennie Perry, assistant principal from Collins Middle School. Following the rally, there will be a march from Bunert Park to the MLK Center, where the Oratory Contest of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and program will begin at 12 Noon. This contest and program exhibits the youth of Navarro County, and Youth Organizations. Please come out and support our youth. For more information, contact E. Burrell at (903) 874-2821.



Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance will present its Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday program at the Taylorosa Event Center on West Texas Hwy 22. "A Day On, Not A Day Off — The Dream Still Lives On" will begin at 7 p.m. Rev. Dairy G. Johnson, Sr. is the chairman of this event. Chairman Johnson is asking for 100 voices for the New Years mass choir ages young and old. Rehearsal dates are set for January 2 and 9, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Along with the mass choir for the evening a message will be given by Pastor Larry L. Polk, Sr. of the Second Mission Baptist Church.



Barry Crime Watch will resume meeting at the Barry Methodist Church at 7 p.m. The guest speakers will be the candidates  for Constable for Prec 4., Kenneth Kirkwood and Tommy Grant. Light refreshments will follow. Everyone is invited.



Jan. 17

Shakers and Scrapers Car Club will hold its monthly meeting at VG’s Event Pavilion (301 E 3rd Ave) at 6:30 p.m.  Shakers and Scrapers is a very diverse group of folks with a common interest of cars and a desire to help local charities and events.  We hold an annual car show during Derrick Days which helps to support a local charity.  If you are interested in seeing if we are a club that you might like to join, please come and attend our meeting.  For information call Dan at (903) 467-7170.



Derrick Days Festival Committee will have an organizational meeting at 12:15 p.m. in the Nancy Roberts Room of the Corsicana Public Library. All those wishing to be involved in the planning and operations of this year’s festival are encouraged to attend. A number of subcommittee positions are available, affording the volunteer great organizational, leadership and event planning opportunities. Brown bag lunches are welcomed. Kinsloe House will host a presentation about CASA and Child Advocates that will feature Jenny Bratton, director of CASA, and Vicki Scoggins, program director. A delicious lunch of “comfort food” will be served including meat loaf with sweet and sour tomato sauce, mashed potatoes, broccoli/cauliflower/raisin salad, banana pudding, etc. Jan Noblett is the auditing committee chair, and other committee members include Seley Fuller, Hanna McCleary, Arlene Stewart and Barbara Watkins. 10th Annual Celebrity Wait, a fundraiser benefitting the Youth of the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center (Corsicana State Home) will be held from 11 a.m. to close at La Pradera Mexican Restaurant, 1401 W. Seventh Ave. Come out for great food and fun and help raise money to benefit the youth at the “Corsicana State Home.” Your banker, preacher, boss, dentist, doctor, even your veterinarian will be serving throughout the day. Your tips will go to the Community Resource Council for the many events that the council provides for the youth throughout the year. Special entertainment will be provided by Steve Colburn from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Healthy Woman presents Pink Pumps and Pearls at 5 p.m. with a Women’s Expo (with shopping, massages, and information from some of the community’s leading businesses and organizations), and dinner and entertainment at 6:30 p.m. The fourth annual event will take place at The Cook Center on Navarro College Campus, and will feature comedian Karen Mills, of Chattanooga, Tenn. Richland Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual chili supper starting at 5 p.m. at the Fire Station/Civic Center on Main Street in Richland. The supper will be free of charge, donations will be accepted. Entertainment by Walker Creek Karaoke and we will raffle a country wood cooler box provided by Loran Vyers with Walker Creek Wood Crafts. A “Reagan Day Dinner” will be held by the Republican Party of Navarro County at 6 p.m. at Napoli’s Pizza and Restaurant, 111 E. Collin Ave. Colton Buckley, Coryell County Young Republicans Chairman and Central Texas TEA Party Young Patriots Coordinator will be the keynote speaker. It will be an chance to meet the Republican Primary Election candidates from Navarro County and multi-county District races. Each will have an opportunity to address the gathering. Feb. 13

Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle will host the second in a three part series on Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The presentation will be 5 to 7 p.m. at the Navarro Regional Hospital Dining Room, with Kimberly Knight of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer’s Organization as the speaker. What are the differences between Alzheimer’s, other dementias and normal memory loss due to aging? This is a good overview for those who have concerns about memory loss or have had a diagnosis of dementia, as well as for those who want information about Alzheimer’s disease. Learn about the Alzheimer’s disease process, and the programs offered by the Greater Dallas Chapter for both the person with Alzheimer’s and the caregiver.

Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle will hold the last in a three part series about Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Navarro Regional Hospital Dining Room, and Kimberly Knight of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer’s Organization will be the speaker. Know the 10 signs:  Early Detection Matters, will be the topic of this program. Learn the warning signs that may be symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.  Understand the importance of visiting your doctor early to rule out treatable conditions that may be the cause of these symptoms.  Early diagnosis helps with planning, treatment, the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and access to support from the Alzheimer's Association.

    After 10 years, Paul DePugh finally did the math. “$89,000 in free meals,” he said. “I asked myself, ‘Am I really giving that away?’” On Monday, the CiCi’s owner was at Carroll Elementary giving away a bicycle to pre-Kindergarten student Nancy Ramirez, who had entered her school’s drawing at his restaurant on West State Highway 31 in April.

    Early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays Monday thru Friday May 14  through May 18, and May 21 through May 25, 2012, in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, 300 W. Third Ave., Corsicana.
    Early voting will be held on the weekend from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday May 19, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, 300 W. Third Ave., Corsicana.

    Most men are content if they live this life and have a loving family to show for it, or a thriving business.
    Don Woodcock has both — but he has something else to show for a big portion of his life.
    On Saturday, a large group of women gathered at the IOOF Special Event Center, and they ranged in age from late 20s to mid-40s. Their common denominator?
    All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives.

  • Early voting enters second week

    As of Monday afternoon, 1,452 people had cast ballots in the county, state and national primary elections going on now in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.
    Early voting hours are 8 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week, ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Election day is May 29.

    Organizers of the Corsicana/Navarro County Clean Up Day scheduled for June 2 have advised the Daily Sun of new hours for the event.

    The countywide Clean Up Day is being held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, not until 2 p.m. as previously announced.
