The House of Refuge knew that students from the Mildred ISD Student council were going to bring some canned goods in from a food drive held at the school.
What they didn’t know was how much.
“This is the largest food drive we’ve ever had!” exclaimed Joann Pierson, co-director of the women’s center along with her husband, Grady.
That haul was the result of a food drive competition held at the Mildred schools, said Fletcher Watts, student council president.
“We’ve been doing the food drive for about 15 years, and almost every year we’ve raised about 1,000 pounds,” Watts said. “This year we did (the drive) for three weeks as a school competition. I believe the freshmen won this year.”
Council sponsor Sherrie Bottoms said several agencies have benefited from the drive over the past few years, including Northside Baptist Church, the Navarro County Food Pantry.
“Mildred has never disappointed, ever,” she said.
Joann Pierson gave the students an overview of the work of the House of Refuge, and explained how important donations are to the center, providing temporary shelter and meals for women and children in difficult situations. She expressed gratitude for the generosity of the students in giving to the House of Refuge.
The House of Refuge is also continuing its Quilt Raffle fund-raiser, raffling off two different quilts. Tickets for the drawing are $10 each, and the winners will be announced on Monday, Dec. 17. To purchase a ticket, call the House of Refuge at (903) 874-3421.

Grand Jury: Houston area rapper indicted locally on drug charges
A multi-platinum selling rap artist from Houston was indicted Thursday by the Navarro County Grand Jury during its May panel. Wesley Eric Weston, known professionally as “Lil’ Flip,” was indicted on charges of possession of a controlled substance over 400 grams.
