Sept. 9-18

The Warehouse Living Arts Center will present a hilarious comedy, “The Kitchen Witches” by Caroline Smith, on September 9-10-11-12, 14, 16-17-18. The title roles will be played by Barbara Erwin and Debbie Hanks with Joe Skrivanek of Ennis and Molly Gaines of Mildred playing supporting roles.

Dolly and Isabel are two "mature" cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years. When circumstances put them to-gether on a TV cooking show, the insults are flung faster than the food and the show becomes a rating smash as Dolly & Isabel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m.. The matinee on Sept. 12 begins at 2 p.m.. Call 903-872-5421 for information and reserved seating. Tickets may be purchased at the door as loon as available. The theatre is located at 119 W 6th Avenue in downtown Corsicana across from the post office.



Sept. 10

The Navarro County Retired School Employees will have an 11:30 a.m. luncheon. CISD Superintendent Diane Frost will be a guest at the luncheon at the Northwest Apartments Community Center, 1360 N. 13th St. All former school employees of the county are urged to attend and renew friendships and make new friends. You do not have to be a member of the organization to attend. We welcome all retired school employees.



Sept. 11

A 9/11 remembrance ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. at Bunert Park in Corsicana to honor first responders and servicemen and women. Residents, police, fire, soldiers and sailors are welcome to attend.



Cry Out America/Patriot Day, featuring Texas Sen. Brian Birdwell, will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Navarro County Courthouse. Birdwell survived the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, and was recently elected state senator for this district.



American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., Corsicana, will have meetings as scheduled. The Executive Committee will meet at 1 p.m. and the Legionnaires will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sons of the American Legion will meet at 3 p.m., and the Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 4 p.m. Please pay your 2011 dues. World War II soldiers who were drafted on Sept. 11, 1944, are having a reunion luncheon at 1 p.m. at the VFW in Corsicana. Soldiers and their spouses are welcome. Donations are being accepted.



Angels of Corsicana, 1020 N. Bus. 45, are hosting a U.S. Troop support group and will be gathering items to send in “care-packages” to the soldiers who are from Corsicana and all over the United States. The group will begin meeting at 9 a.m. to begin packing donated items. Everyone who can help will be greatly appreciated.  Every year the group makes Christmas stockings and fills them with personal items that soldiers might want and need. Christmas is near and there is a lot of sewing to be done. If you can sew this would be a great way to help our soldiers. If you have items to donate, they can be dropped off at 4 p.m. daily at the American Legion Post 22, located at 632 N. Beaton Street, Corsicana. Postage is very expensive when sending items overseas, so any donations are greatly appreciated. Carter BloodCare is having a community blood drive on the Carter BloodCare Coach, hosted by McCoy’s Building Supply, 3000 S. Hwy. 287, Corsicana, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, September 11. Potential donors can be 16 years old with a parent’s consent; 17-year-olds may donate independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health, and present a photo ID. Ideally, a donor should also eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before giving blood. Corsicana FITKAMP is now forming to begin eight weeks of group fitness training to include; eight personalized workouts, nutrition counseling/meal plans, circuit station training, interval training, cardiovascular fitness, hip-hop ABS, and hip-hop turbo kick all taught by certified FITKAMP instructors. Navarro County Genealogy Society will host Bruce McManus, local historian and author, at 10 a.m. in the Nancy Robert’s Community Meeting Room of the Corsicana Public Library, 100 N. 12th St.  for its September meeting. The program will focus on cemetery symbolism “Stories in Stone.” Bruce has researched and recorded historical information for over 70 cemeteries in the county. He recently completed a cemetery mapping project for the Texas Department of Transportation and is researching a historical market for the community of Pinkston. Northside Baptist Church to host Grief Share, a special weekly support group for people grieving the death of someone close. At Grief Share meetings valuable information is available to help those going through this type of difficult time life. A fish fry to benefit the Peterson Board will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. The cost of lunch is an $7 donation to the day care center. Both take-out and eat-in lunches will be available. For more information call the Peterson Day Care Center.



Sept. 12

Former Texas Rep. Steve Wolens will be the guest speaker at an unveiling of a historical marker at the Corsicana Hebrew Cemetery, at 2 p.m. at the Third Avenue entrance, between 31st and 35th streets. Dr. Tommy Stringer will be  master of ceremonies at the unveiling, and a closing prayer will be said by Rabbi Frank Joseph.

Sept. 14

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade,  2508 West Seventh Avenue, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961, and May 7,1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

Corsicana and Navarro County will host a tire disposal day from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Navarro County Precinct 1 barn, at the intersection of Texas Highway 31 and FM 2555 (across from the College Park Mall). A $1 per tire fee will be charged, and people must bring identification to prove residency. No commercial tire dealers or hauler’s will be allowed to dispose of their tires.



Sept. 25

Hooked on Fishing, a special fishing tournament for children and teens hosted by the City of Corsicana’s Parks and Recreation Department, will take start with registration at 7 a.m. at the I.O.O.F. Park in Corsicana. The first lines can drop in the water at 7:30 a.m.



Fort Worth Iris Society Iris Sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25. Admission is free. The sale is to be held at the Fort Worth Botanical Center, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd., Fort Worth. Chili’s “Donate our Profit Days ”, is hosting an event where all of the restaurants will donate the total days profit to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The restaurant asks the public to come and support this one day that can change the lives of children who depend on services from the hospital.

A Corsicana Oktoberfest is being planned to raise money for the annual spring festival of Derrick Days. The fall event is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 2 at Napoli’s in downtown Corsicana. The cost of admission will be $10 and the Derrick Days committee will also be selling bratwurst, sauerkraut and pretzels.

Cause for Paws, a barn-raising event to benefit a new animal shelter, will take place from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Dobbins Crossing, at the intersection of Dobbins and N. 26th St. From noon until 5 p.m. will be a series of family and kid-oriented activities, including a bounce house, vendors, professional pet photographs and hot dogs. That evening, a barbecue dinner, dance and silent auction will take place. Only 300 tickets will be sold to the event, and the cost is $35 per person, or $50 per couple if purchased before Oct. 2.   • North Texas firm announces jerky recall

    Texas Slabs’ jerky has issued a voluntary recall notice, effective Friday, according to proprietor Scott McGinty.
    The company makes flavored beef jerky and is headquartered out of Mansfield. Some of the jerky was distributed in Corsicana in January.
