Kerens Church of the Living God, P.G.T.,141 S. Hwy. 309, Kerens, announces the church anniversary and revival. The church anniversary will be 3:30 p.m. Sept. 12, and the revival will be 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13, 14 and 15. Dr. Wheeler Jones of the Baxter Street Church of the Living God P.G.T. will be the guest speaker for both events at the church. The public is invited to celebrate with the church.
Lifeline Fellowship Family Church, 5301 W. Hwy. 31, Corsicana, along with Pastor Ricky and Dorothy Walter, will be hosting special guest the Rev. Gloria Hawkins of Detroit, Mich., 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, and Noon on Saturday, Aug. 28. The Rev. has been a Christian for over 22 years and has been preaching God’s word for a number of years. She is also a native of Corsicana, and the wife of Wade Hawkins.
Straight Way Missionary Baptist Church, 400 South 15th St., Corsicana, will observe their mission program on Sunday, beginning with Sunday School Starting at 9:45 a.m. and Worship at 11 a.m. The mission is under the leadership of Evangelist F. Kitchen. Guest speaker will be will be Evangelist Machlean Grant. Evangelist Grant is a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church, is under the leadership of Pastor Joe Hubbard Sr., works for the Fairfield Post Office as a rural carrier, she is married to Carlton Grant and they have one son, Cory. Other participants in the special service will be Pastor A.E. Smith, Mother J. Alexander, Sis. L. Watts, Sis. J. West, Mother Jerline Alexander, Sis. A. Polk and the Straight Way Choir. Evangelist F. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 312 N. 13th St., will offer a service of wholeness at 7 p.m., Aug. 29, in the church sanctuary. During this service, there will be extended times for silent reflection and prayers for wholeness and healing for yourselves, those you love and all creation. As a way of enacting the prayers and remembering God’s promise and love, anointing with oil, will be offered by the pastor, the Rev. Darla Blatnik, for those who desire to receive that sign. The community is invited to attend this unique service.

Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast will meet at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, in the Lone Star Room of the Walker Dining Hall on the Navarro College campus. This meeting is open to all men in the community. Open Bible study and gospel singing is held every Thursday at the Senior Activity Center, 919 W. Park Ave., Corsicana. There is no cost to attend. Kerens Missionary Baptist Church announces information on regular services of the church: 10 a.m. Sunday School, 11 a.m. Worship Service, 6 p.m. Sunday Evening Service, and 7 p.m. Wednesday Evening Service. At 2:30 p.m., on the first Sunday of each month services are held at Kerens Care Center. Wednesday evening services focus on the study of different books of the Bible. Taylor’s Memorial Church,1600 G.W. Jackson Ave. in Corsicana, will be hosting a benefit musical for the C.D. Washington family at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 27. The event will be given on behalf of Donell Washington who is in Baylor Hospital. The Washington’s are the ministry leaders at the Greater Haynes Memorial Church in Mexia. Many anointed singers and musicians will be appearing on the program to help raise funds for the family. Northside Baptist Church, 2800 North Beaton Street is beginning a program called Grief Share, a non-denominational weekly support group for people grieving the death of someone close. The finality of death is hard to accept, and Grief Share is a place to be around people who understand the pain of loss. This support group will begin meeting 5 to 7 p.m., Sept. 12, in the Fellowship Center (small white house across from the parking lot) 222 Forest Lane, Corsicana. Meetings will consist of three components: Video seminar, Grief Share workbook, and group discussion. The Grief Share group is open to everyone. The only expense is the $10 workbook. The Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ church family and Pastor Billy Joe Kelly invite all in Corsicana and the surrounding communities to a benefit for the Timothy Cemetery Association at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28. Special guests include The Gospel Five of Corsicana, who will be entertaining for the fundraiser. Bethel AMEC Missionary has a special Sunday morning speaker, Bethel’s own Sis. Penny A. Liggins, planned for 11 a.m. Aug. 29. Penny has been a resident of Corsicana her whole life. She is a 1981 graduate of Corsicana High School, and a 1983 Navarro College graduate, with an AA degree. She is currently employed with UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas as an administrative assistant. She is a proud mother of one daughter Brittney Liggins-Deckard; grandmother to Zachary, Za’Ryah and Zane Deckard; daughter of the late Joseph and Wynona Overby-Liggins; she is also the sister of the late Reginald “Ricky” Liggins I, and Gregory Liggins. Penny is a former member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church from the time of her birth to the age 30, then she joined Bethel 17 years ago. She now serves as church secretary, choir member, assistant secretary of the Missionary Society, President of the Lay Organization, stewardess and delegate to next months annual conference to be held at Wesley Chapel AMEC in Fort Worth, TX. Sis, Liggins’ favorite scripture is Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” The church asks for prayers that it will be a good day for all; all day in Christ Jesus. New Rising Star Institutional District Missionary Baptist General Association Dallas, Inc., now in their seventh year, welcomes the Rev. Dairy G. Johnson, Sr., as he becomes the second Moderator of the Association. The Rev. Johnson succeeded Dr. L.B. Sanders as Moderator. Johnson will be responsible for eight churches in the Dallas area including Corsicana, Ennis, Ferris, Dallas, Waxahachie, and the Grand Prairie area. Prior to this appointment the Rev. Johnson served as the Congress President in the old Rising District Association for five years. He currently serves as the Senior Pastor of the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Corsicana, with 26 years of faithful and dedicated service. The Rev. is a graduate of Navarro College, with an Associate of Applied Science Degree, graduate of Southern Bible Institute of Dallas, in 1987 with an Associates in Biblical Studies, a graduate of Faith Evangelical Seminary, Tacoma, Wash., in 2009, with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and he is now currently working on graduate studies at Liberty University, pursuing his Masters in Theology. The Rev. Johnson is a member of the Board of Directors of Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, Corsicana Rotary Noon Club, NAACP Member, Co-Chair Community Out Reach Committee of the Chamber, and also serves as an Assistant to the Vice President of Student Services at Navarro College. The Rev. has been married to Ellender P. Johnson for 36 years; together they have three adult children Tiffany D. Johnson, Dairy G. Johnson, Jr., and Elizabeth R. Johnson; they also have two grand children, Xavier and Caleb Medlock.

Former Mildred school leader passes
Doug Lane, who was superintendent of schools at Mildred Independent School District for 24 years until retiring in 2011, died Sunday at a hospital in Tyler. He was 70 years old.

One killed, five hurt in Interstate rollover
One man was killed and five others injured Sunday when a Ford Expedition rolled several times and jumped a cable barrier on Interstate 45 south of Corsicana.
