Corsicana —
When it comes to the First United Methodist Church’s annual turkey spaghetti luncheon, it’s a matter of mathematics.
Each year, the women set aside seed money to buy the ingredients for the next year’s event. Then, they shop sales year-round to buy the cream of mushroom soup and cream of chicken soup and pasta that goes into the main dish.
One turkey equals one cooker of spaghetti. One cooker will serve 50 people for lunch, or 13 to 15 quarts of take-away. They’ll go through about 15 turkeys this year, they estimate.
And each quart of turkey spaghetti gobbled up, or luncheon slurped down means more money for the local United Way, Salvation Army and Child Advocacy Center and worldwide missions, all of which are charities supported by the First United Methodist Women who host the spaghetti supper and do all that math each year, according to Ruth Nelson, committee member.
The annual event will take place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church, 320 N. 15th St.
In addition to take-out pints and quarts of turkey spaghetti, they also offer take-out lunches and dine-in lunches, as well as a bazaar of homemade or semi-homemade baked goods, jellies and jams, needlework and other crafts.
“Last year, we had 340 take-outs, plus we had two or three seatings in the great hall of people who came and shopped at the bazaar,” Nelson said. New to the bazaar offerings this year are pints of chili, corn chowder and an orange dip.
A silent auction will close out at 1 p.m. on the day of the luncheon. Among the items in the auction are homemade wooden boxes made by Zane Stites, pies, a night in a lodge, and other services.
“We have inexpensive things and things that could be pricey, but that’s why it’s a silent auction,” Nelson said.
People can call the church kitchen’s rotary phone line as early as 10 a.m. on the day of the luncheon to order take-out meals, and people can make use of the “personal shoppers” who will set aside specific pies, cakes or quarts of spaghetti until after the luncheon.
The take-out line is (903) 874-5657. Personal shoppers will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the foyer of Martin Hall.
