Dec. 31

VFW Post 3366 will host a New Year’s Dance from 8 to 12 p.m. at the post. There will be a classic country band, snacks and party favors. The cost is $15 per person, at the door or in advance. For more information, call (903) 872-3811 after 4 p.m.



Jan. 2

Eureka Crime Watch WILL NOT meet in January due to New Year’s Day. Regular monthly meetings will resume in February. Have a safe and happy holiday, and remember all those who go in harm’s way on our behalf.



Jan. 3

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Navarro County Sheriff Elect Elmer Tanner. Light refreshments will be served and everyone is invited to come and hear our new sheriff.



American Red Cross will hold a Blood Drive from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 320 N. 15th in Corsicana.



Jan. 5

Mary Peterson Child Care Center will hold a concert and reception at 7:30 p.m. at The Cook Center. The purpose of the concert is to raise funds for a new facility to be constructed for Mary Peterson Child Care Center. This awareness event is themed “Bridge to the Future — Mary Peterson Child Care Center.”



The American Legion Post 22 will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the post at 632 N. Beaton St. There are many business items to be discussed including future projects. All members are urged to attend.



Jan. 6

The Kinsloe House will have its First Sunday Luncheon of the new year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The First Sunday Luncheon is open to the public. This month’s menu will have an Italian theme with Italian meatball soup, chicken parmesean or Italian beef tips with appropriate vegetables. Since Kinsloe House is closed for the holidays, those wanting to attend the lunch will need to call Jeani at (903) 229-5787 or email her at mamajeani@yahoo.com by January 3.



Jan. 7

The City Of Blooming Grove will hold its Monthly City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce, Blooming Grove, TX  76626.



Jan. 8

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West 7th Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.



The Corsicana Emergency Corps., located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The general public is invited to attend.  Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.  For further information, please call (903) 872-5072.



National Association of Active/Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1191 will hold its monthly meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ryan’s Buffet in Waxahachie. Members and guests are welcome. Mr. Gregory Wilhelm will present a program on the legal aspects of life as a senior citizen. Jan. 12

Heritage Oaks Retirement will have a Breast Cancer Benefit for Fran LaCoste from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. selling barbecue sandwich plates for $5, which includes sandwich, chips, drink and a mint. Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 will have its meeting at 6 p.m. in the Lodge Hall at 200 W. Oak Lawn.  All members, their families and guests are cordially invited.

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Healthy Woman program presents An Evening with Elizabeth Smart at 6 p.m. at the IOOF Event Center.  Elizabeth’s presentation not only tells her story of being abducted in 2002 and held prisoner for 9 months, but also discusses topics such as overcoming extreme adversity and not allowing your past to dictate your future.     When it comes to red carpet fashion, comedienne Joan Rivers is one of the more well-known, self-appointed authorities, and she had plenty to say during Thursday’s  9th Annual VOICE, Inc., Spring Luncheon and Style Show.
    More than 100 people attended the annual fundraising event at the Cook Center, which featured local models showing off fashions from area retailers while the show’s emcee, Ellie Weingardt, delivered witty commentary as a Rivers impersonator.

  • Grand Jury: Houston area rapper indicted locally on drug charges

     A multi-platinum selling rap artist from Houston was indicted Thursday by the Navarro County Grand Jury during its May panel. Wesley Eric Weston, known professionally as “Lil’ Flip,” was indicted on charges of possession of a controlled substance over 400 grams. Weston and another man, Dematrius Delane Richardson, were arrested by DPS troopers Oct. 18, 2012

  • Fire Marshal's Office: Panel had blast site access

    AUSTIN — The Texas State Fire Marshal's Office says a federal safety panel's investigators had access to the site of the West fertilizer plant blast that killed 15 people and injured about 200 others.

  • Texas has 8 of top 15 fastest-growing cities in US

    HOUSTON — New estimates show Texas has eight of the nation's 15 fastest-growing cities. Estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show San Marcos in Central Texas led the way with a nearly 5 percent population boom between July 2011 and July 2012. That's the highest rate among U.S. cities with at least 50,000 people.

    It took less than 30 minutes for a devastating EF-5 tornado to make a shambles out of the community of Moore, Okla. on Monday afternoon.
    It took less than two days for Texas country musicians Scott Brown and Josh Ward to find themselves stopping in Corsicana on their way to Moore with three trailers full of relief supplies for the victims of the storm.
