CORSICANA - Numbering almost three dozen, friends of Lisa Miller came out Thursday as the Main Street Advisory Board honored the former Corsicana Visitor Center employee with a downtown bench.
“Even though she wasn’t from here, she embraced Corsicana,” one said.
“She was hard working,” said another.
“She was always smiling.”
Miller, 55, passed away Nov. 22. She was a part-time employee at the Corsicana Visitor Center, but left a full-time impression. Her memory will live on at the corner of North Beaton and Third Avenue on one of the new benches the Main Street organization is attempting to place throughout downtown.
The bench sits in front of the IOOF building, facing south.
“I picked this site,” Main Street Director Steve Dieterichs said, “because of the view down Beaton.”
Indeed, the view captures downtown from almost its northern-most point on Beaton all the way down to Seventh Avenue.
It marked the second of a planned 45 new benches Dieterichs hopes to have placed. The other rests near the statue of the oilman at Sixth Avenue and South Beaton. Main Street is about to order 35 more, and that will leave eight to be ordered at a later date, he said.
Members of the Main Street Advisory Board were on hand for Thursday’s lunch-time dedication, as were members of Memaw’s Misfits, a clogging group Miller belonged to. Her husband of 24 years, Sam Miller, was also on hand.
City councilwoman Ruby Williams also attended.
“She was such a hard worker,” said Brad Haynie, who said Miller worked with him during Derrick Days. “She would come early, and stay late.”
Members of Memaw’s Misfits recalled her free spirit and love of life.
“She’d always entertain the kids,” one said.
“They had a tip jar, and she’d always dance up to the tip jar,” said another one, acting out her moves.
“One of those husbands always said she was the one with ants in her pants,” another laughed.
