Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White will be at the Corsicana Public Library from noon to 2 p.m. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call Eddie Pevehouse at (903) 872-3899.

Aug. 2

Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild (PQG) will meet begining at 9:30 a.m. at the Westhill Church of Christ, 3400 West Highway 22. The business meeting will begin at 10 a.m.  Guests are welcome. The program will be to work on “Wonky Town” blocks.  Those who wish to participate in the sewing need to bring the usual sewing supplies and a sewing machine.  Bright fabrics will be provided, but any interested in contributing bright fabrics are encouraged to do so.  Cutting, pressing and squaring of blocks are other options for those who choose not to bring a sewing machine.  Members are encouraged to bring their lunches and plan to stay through for the afternoon Sit and Sew and continue working on “Wonky Town” blocks or their personal projects. The City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthy city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 South Fordyce St.



Aug. 3

A classic car and motorcycle show to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Chili’s parking lot, 2201 S. Interstate 45, Corsicana. Categories include classic cars, motorcycles and race cars. The team that raises the most donations will win a dinner. All proceeds raised will go to St. Jude’s to benefit children with cancer.



Oak Valley Crime Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Valley Community Center. Ray Jacobs will be the guest speaker, and he will talk about adult probation and community service. The dinner will be pot luck. People are invited to bring a dish and share food, fellowship and program. For more information, call president Bob O’Dell at (903) 872-3876.



Aug. 4

Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka United Methodist Church. Special guest speaker will be Karen Morris, chief appraiser of the Navarro Central Appraisal District. The public is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.



Aug. 5

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Volunteer Fire Department building. The guest speaker will be County Judge H.M. Davenport Jr. Light refreshments will be served, and all are invited to attend.



Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3366, located at Veterans Drive off West State Highway 31, will have its monthly meeting of all members in good standing. Meeting will start at 6:30 pm. All members are encouraged to attend and participate.



Aug. 7

American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will have meetings as scheduled: Executive comittee at 1 p.m.; Legionnaires at 1:30 p.m.; Sons of American Legion, 3 p.m.; Ladies Auxilliary at 4 p.m. To attend the meetings, membership must be current. Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 will meet at 6 p.m. at Liberty Hall. All members, their families and guests are cordially invited. This is a member outreach meeting so bring someone who might be interested in becoming a member.

The Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a free workshop on “How to Start a Small Business” from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, 120 N. 12th Street. Eureka Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All Masons are invited.



Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade,  2508 West Seventh Avenue, Corisicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961, and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.



Corsicana Emergency Corps, located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7:30pm. The general public is invited to attend. Aug. 14

Wesley Johnson with the NBA and a graduate of Corsicana High will speak at the 4th annual Back to School/Stay in School rally at Fullerton-Garitty Park. The event, which will also feature prizes, free school supplies and backpacks as well as entertainment, will go from 9 a.m. to noon at the park. Free transportation to the park will be provided, with 8:30 a.m. pickups from each of the Corsicana elementary schools as well as the Northwest Housing complex. Prizes this year include I-Tunes cards, certificates for school clothing, sports equipment and more. Angels of Corsicana will meet at 9 a.m. at 1020 N. Business 45. If you have items to donate for the U.S. troops, please bring it to the meeting or drop it off at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St. after 4 p.m. daily. Many boxes are mailed each month to the troops. Donations to help cover the cost of postage are greatly appreciated. Aug. 28

The Knights of Columbus, Council 5211 will host a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on South Highway 22 in Corsicana to benefit the Catholic school. At 6 p.m. a barbecue dinner will be served. Admission costs $50 per player and includes $3,000 in poker chips. Players can buy $3,000 more in chips for an additional $25 donation. Advance tickets cost $45, and may be purchased from any KC Council 5211 member. Prizes, including a 37-inch flat screen TV, will be awarded to the top three players. Aug. 31

The Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a seminar on Funding Your Small Business from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, 120 N. 12th Street. Attendees will discover the variety of loans available and the process for getting funds guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Information will also be presented that covers what lenders want to see when making a business loan, the myths and realities of grant funding, and alternative lending sources to consider.
