City offers half-price pet adoptions through June 20

Corsicana — Problems with animal dumping are increasing in the county and the Corsicana Animal Shelter is filling up as a result.

The number of dogs and cats now being held at the shelter has drastically increased over the last few months with 112 animals presently on site, including both dogs and cats.

As a result, the shelter is trying to counteract the rising numbers of animals by offering all dogs, cats and puppies at a reduced adoption price of $25 until June 20. Many of the animals are already spayed or neutered, giving potential owners reduced cost commitments should they want to adopt an animal, said Katy Watkins, the animal services supervisor at the shelter.

“Spring and the beginning of summer is when there are a lot of new litters of kittens and puppies and we have had a lot of impounds from the county and the city,” she said.

“We are constantly taking in more so we need to get them adopted out so we can take care of the ones still coming in. Sometimes we do have to euthanize for lack of room but that is what we are trying to prevent.”

Dogs including dachshunds, a Maltese, a Chesapeake retriever, blue heelers and red heelers are all available at the shelter. Labrador mixes and long-haired and short-haired cats and kittens of all colors are also available for adoption.

Information provided by County Sheriff Les Cotten, shows that dumping of animals is considered a Class A Misdemeanor offense under Section 42.092 of the penal code. The offense can be punishable by way of a fine up to $4,000 or a year in jail, or both. Repeat offenders who have been found to have committed the offense twice previously can face felony charges if they are caught in the act.

“A lot of the animals that are being brought in are being dumped in the county. Most folks when they are dumping animals go out into the county so that they don’t get caught,” Watkins added.

“If anyone can ever get a license plate of someone they see dumping, we can try to do something about it. Unfortunately most people that are doing that try and make sure nobody sees them.”

The shelter is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m.  to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. It is located at 617 South 12th. To find out more about adopting animals from the shelter, call (903) 654-4928 or visit www.petfinder.com.
