Westside Baptist Church
Westside Baptist Church will have its fifth Sunday gospel celebration at 6 p.m. April 30. The celebration service will feature the McKissack family from Groveton. Jeremy McKissack is the former pianist for First Baptist Church, Corsicana. He now teaches school, along with his wife Lynell, for Groveton Independent School District. Both have been instructors for several years in the Texas Southern Gospel School of Music.
Special guest will be Pauline Thompson, former longtime resident and teacher in Corsicana.
A fellowship will follow the gospel music program. The public is cordially invited to attend. Westside Baptist Church is located at 1522 N. 24th St. Interim pastor is the Rev. B.F. Risinger.
St. Hill COGIC
St. Hill Church of God in Christ, Butler community, located at 519 County Road 360, Fairfield, where Elder Anthony Taylor is pastor, will have “Gospel Concert II” at 7 p.m. May 5. Appearing for the first time together, live and in concert, will be Debra Gibson, Minister Gertrude Richardson and Pastor P.A. Rischer. Admission will be free.
Gibson is a gospel artist, singer and songwriter with two recordings to her credit, “No Greater Love” and “Momma’s Love.” She has opened up for various artists including The Mighty Clouds of Joy, saxophonist Vernard Johnson, Texaz Boys of Dallas, and the late Willie Neal Johnson. She is a member of Simpson Chapel Baptist Church in Tadmore.
Richardson is a gospel artist with one recording to her credit, “Who Holds Tomorrow.” Her latest project is scheduled for release later this year. Richardson is the founder of Church of Grace Without Walls Ministries and is a member of Taylor’s Memorial COGIC in Corsicana.
Completing this anointed trio is gospel singer and preacher, P.A. Rischer, who is the pastor of Faith Temple Ministries in Fairfield. Rischer hosts a talk show, “Live with Pastor P,” which is seen on cable television in the Palestine area.
Bethel AME Church
The Dennis Johnson Missionary Society of Bethel AME Church will observe this fifth Sunday as missionary day. Guest speaker for the 11 a.m. worship hour will be Brother Tim Betts.
Betts, an employee with the Texas Youth Commission for nine years, is a graduate of Navarro College with an associate’s degree and he attended Southwest Texas State University, where he studied history and political science. He is currently attending Texas A&M; University-Commerce and is working on his teacher certification. He has been married for three years to Tara Betts, and he was ordained as a deacon at the age of 17 at Olive Grove Baptist Church.
Kelly’s Temple COGIC
Kelly’s Temple Church of God in Christ will celebrate the fifth Sunday women’s day service April 30. Service will begin with Sunday school at 9 a.m. Worship will begin at 11:30 a.m. Speaker of the hour will be Missionary Cherilyn Moss. She is the wife of Deacon James E. Straight Way Missionary Baptist Church, 400 S. 15th St., will observe the deacon and deaconess annual at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Word Church
The Word Church will sponsor a booth at Derrick Days April 29. The booth, which will be about “Angel Food,” will be in front of the Corsicana Public Library. “Angel Food” is top quality food bought fresh for only $25, but you get $75 to $85 worth of food, enough to feed a family of four an entire week.

First Assembly of God Church in Dawson
First Assembly of God Church in Dawson will host this month’s fifth Sunday singing at 6 p.m. April 30. Special guest for this Sunday will be the Southern Joy quartet from Corsicana. Admission will be free.
Southern Joy began as a trio in Corsicana almost 10 years ago. That trio of Joe and Rudy Lopez, along with Elton A. Raney were joined by bass singer Paul Furguson in 2000. Since their inception, they have blessed many congregations and special gatherings with their anointed and talented music.
In addition to their local ministry for various churches and events, they have also performed on radio and in concerts with other artists such as Ivan Parker and the Melody Boys. They were nominated for the Inspirational Group of the Year by the Coast to Coast Country Music Association.

National Day of Prayer
National Day of Prayer will be observed May 4. Locally, the day will begin with a breakfast from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 510 W. Collin St., Corsicana. Call (903) 872-7473 for reservations. A prayer service will be held at 12:15 p.m. on the south steps of the Navarro County Courthouse. In case of inclement weather, it will be held inside in the county courtroom. A prayer chain will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the courthouse square with area churches participating. Free refreshments will be provided for prayer-chain participants during the day by the Navarro County Dream Center.
Also, if you have personal prayer requests or needs, Pocket Park, 120 N. Beaton Street, will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 4. There will be someone there to pray with you and for you.
Preceding the National Day of Prayer, a prayer rally for youth will be held at 7 p.m. May 3 at the Baptist Student Center, 3245 W. Seventh Ave., across from Navarro College.

Gander Mountain now home to small deer population
