This column is designed to give our local readers a place to put news and events that are important to them and others in the community.

Local news such as public meetings, luncheons, events and other non-club local items for not-for-profit associations are listed in this column.

Church events are printed separately in Church News published on Fridays.

Oct. 1

American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., invites members and their guests for the annual Central Texas Dart Association banquet. Lunch will be served at noon; bring a covered dish. Awards will start at 1 p.m. Sign up before 1:30 p.m. for the tournament which will begin at 2 p.m. For more information, call (903) 874-3938.



Oct. 2

The district court jury panel set for 1:30 p.m. has been dismissed.



City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce, Blooming Grove.



Corsicana Art League will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center, 919 W. Park Ave. It will be a meeting and set up for painting. The league is starting a new year and welcomes anyone interested to come to the meeting.



Mothers Against Methamphetamines Chapter will present Iris and Duane Blue and their son, Denim. They will be the guest speakers at the 6 p.m. meeting, held at Northside Baptist Church Fellowship Center, 222 Forrest Lane. Iris and Duane Blue are supported by the North American Mission Board. You are invited to come hear their extraordinary testimonies of how God delivered them from the bondage of drug addiction.



Texas Motorcycle Rights Association 2, a new chapter in Navarro County, will meet at 7 p.m. at That Church, 3640 N. Business 45. All bikers are welcome. For more information, call James at (903) 327-2929.



Piecemakers Quilt Guild will meet at 10 a.m. at the Warehouse Living Arts Center. Guests are welcome. Oct. 2-27

Piecemakers Quilt Guild will have its 26th annual quilt show at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Quilts will on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Free admission. Oct. 3

Corsicana Chapter 118, Order of Eastern Star, will have a stated meeting at the Corsicana Masonic Temple, 201 N. 15th St. All area OES members are invited to attend. Blooming Grove Historical Society will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at Heritage Hall of Blooming Grove United Methodist Church. Richard Hinkle will present a program on L.B. Clogging classes will be held at the Senior Activity Center, 919 W. Park Ave. Beginners class will be at 6 p.m. and the experienced cloggers class will begin at 7 p.m. All ages welcome. Classes are held each Tuesday. For more information, call (903) 654-4980.



Oak Valley Crime Watch will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Oak Valley Town Hall. Bring a dish and enjoy food and fellowship. The speaker for the evening will be County Judge Alan Bristol. Everyone is invited to attend.



Navarro County Branch of the NAACP nominating committee will be available for interview interested members who would like to serve as officers or at-large executive members for the next two-year term. Interviewing will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave. All members are encouraged to participate. Oct. 4

Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at Eureka United Methodist Church. The program will be a detailed discussion of the proposed bonds for new construction at Mildred ISD. Schedule permitting, Supt. Doug Lane will attend and will be happy to answer your questions. Everyone is urged to attend this meeting, participate in the discussion of this very important bond issue, and enjoy the fellowship with friends and neighbors. Refreshments will be served following the program.



The weather warning sirens will be tested at 1 p.m., weather permitting. If you have any questions regarding this test, please contact fire marshal James Palos at (903) 654-4961.



The City of Rice will test its emergency storm siren at 1 p.m. If inclement weather, the test will not take place. For more information, contact city hall at (903) 326-7511.



Oct. 5

Navarro County Republican Women will meet on the seventh floor of the Bank of America building. There will be a guest speaker. Please RSVP by Oct. 3 to Sharon at (903) 362-1151. For more information, go to www.navgop.com.



Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. John Paul Ross, Precinct 4 county commissioner, will be the speaker. Light refreshments will be served.

A mental health screening will be provided from noon to 2 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library by the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and Family and Consumer Sciences of the Texas Cooperative Extension of Navarro County. The public is invited to attend this free educational community event. The screening forms will be for depression, bipolar, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Thomas Sheriff will be available to review mood surveys and discuss the first steps towards better mental health. North Central Texas WorkForce’s Corsicana Center will host a “Workshop Center Orientation” at 10 a.m. and a job search workshop on “Interview Tips” at 10 a.m. at its office, 720 N. Beaton St. “Basic Computer Skills” training will be offered at 5:30 p.m. at the center, but seating is limited and you must pre-register for this training. A tailgate party for the community will be held at Tiger Stadium from 5 to 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the Corsicana High School student council. The homecoming king will be announced at the tailgate party, and several student organizations will be there with fund-raisers. They will be serving drinks, food and have a live DJ.



Oct. 5-8

Pelham community homecoming will be held Oct. 5-8. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Union Baptist Church with singing and preaching; 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Brown Chapel AME Church with talent, worship services and motivational speaker; from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 7 with Pelham High School alumni day, fun and frolic, family and friends activities at Pelham Community History Museum — food, drinks, games, prizes, jump fun, hay ride, music, Panther country store and raffle, bring lawn chairs, and museum will be open for tours from 6 to 7 p.m.; and homecoming worship services at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 8 with dinner served following services at the Pelham Community Center. Corsicana High School juniors have a deadline of Oct. 6 to sign up with CHS counselors to take PSAT test Oct. 28 with the testing fee paid for by Corsicana Achievers Reaching Excellence.



Oct. 7

The Corsicana Opry will be held at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Music Hall, 201 S. Beaton St. at Sixth Avenue. Virginia Martin and the Corsicana Opry Band will spotlight Sissy Dee and Alyssa Wilchar. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Admission will be $10 per person. Tickets are available at The Ark on North Beaton Street or by calling (903) 872-8226. Concessions will also be available.

Corsicana-Navarro County Public Health Department will begin giving flu shots from 8 to 11 a.m. The cost will be $25 unless on Medicare. If on Medicare, bring your Medicare card to the clinic. After this clinic, flu shots will be given from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until the vaccine supply is depleted.



Alzheimer’s Association will have a caregiver class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Navarro Regional Hospital, 3201 W. State Highway 22, Corsicana. This class will provide caregivers with information, guidance and training to assist them in caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. Class is free for family members of people with Alzheimer’s. For professional caregivers, a fee of $20 is required. Topics will be an overview of Alzheimer’s disease, meeting daily challenges, communication, safety, managing difficult behavior, and caring for the caregiver. To register, call (800) 272-3900.



Oct. 7-28

Dawson Saddle Club will have a buckle series at 6 p.m. Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 at the Dawson Saddle Club arena, located on State Highway 31 east of Dawson. Age groups will be 6 and under, 7 to 9, 10 to 21, 13 to 17, and 18 and over. Buckle to highest point in each age group. Must attend all four shows for awards. Negative coggins required. Oct. 8

The annual memorial service for Family First Hospice patients who have taken their final journey this year will be held at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 300 Sherman Street, Ennis. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call (972) 878-2273.



Oct. 9

Congressman Joe Barton will be the guest speaker at the Navarro County Republican Party meeting at 7 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Bank of America building. Chips, dips, sandwiches and cold drinks will be served. For more information, call party chairman Joan Timmons at (903) 875-1729.

Corsicana Band Boosters will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Corsicana High School band hall. Parents of students in Drane Intermediate School, Collins Middle School and Corsicana High School bands, and anyone else who is interested in encouraging and supporting the band program are invited to attend. Band Booster membership is $5 per family. Also, you are encouraged to stop by CiCi’s for “Band Night” from 5 p.m. to closing as the business will donate 10 percent of proceeds to the Band Booster program.



Oct. 10

Cancer Support Group, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Clinic. Dr. Scott Middleton will be the speaker. Use back parking lot and back door of the clinic. Oct. 11-13, 17-19

The Salvation Army will take applications for Christmas assistance from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 11-13 and Oct. 17-19 at The Salvation Army Church, 202 E. First Ave. When applying for assistance, bring the following: Social Security cards for each member of the household; birth certificates or Medicaid form for children 12 and younger; verification of income (i.e. pay stubs); and verification of expense (i.e. rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, medical bills, etc.); ages and clothing sizes of children under 12. Applicants must apply in person. Applications will not be taken over the phone. Make sure arrangements have been made for your children due to limited space. Senior citizens on limited income may also apply for Christmas help. Documents for seniors will be the same as above.



Oct. 12

Corsicana Antique Dealers Association will have a round-table meeting at 6 p.m. at Wicklow Inn. Come and bring your ideas. All members and anyone interested in joining are invited. For more information, call Blane Lowe at (903) 872-6445.
