Local Aggies are bewildered.
The winners of the annual Navarro County A&M; Club Fajita Cookoff for the last three years have been ... Red Raiders.
What gives?
“We changed out judges, so we can’t blame the judging. We tried stacking the deck, and that didn’t work,” offers local Aggie Russell Hudson.
Could this year mean a four-peat for the Texas Tech crew?
“We’re gonna have to put a thumbprint or something on their entry this year,” suggested Sharla Allen with the City of Corsicana team, all Aggie-proud. “We’re just sick about Tech!”
No matter the outcome, the annual fundraiser for the local Aggie club’s scholarship fund promises fun and food for all from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Palmer Crystal Ballroom downtown.
Teams are still being organized for the event, this year marking the 20th anniversary of the local cookoff. Judges, in a blind “taste-test,” render a verdict on the best fajita fixings from among the entrants.
Each team is provided with the same basic fajita fixings to prepare the cookoff entries. Plates are then sold for the public to enjoy by the various teams entered.
Expected to compete again this year in addition to last year’s Texas Tech team are teams from Corsicana National Bank and Trust, the City of Corsicana, ABC Fertilizer, Container Sales, Knights of Columbus, Pineda’s Nursery, Friendly Cafe and H-E-B.
Grand prize? Bragging rights for the year. Trophies are also awarded in several categories, but for all the real prize is the money raised for scholarships the club presents annually to Navarro County students who are bound for College Station to continue their education.
Tickets for the fajita dinner that follows the cookoff are $12 for adults, $5 for students under 18, and children six and under eat free. Also during the dinner, Navarro County A&M; Club members will be selling raffle tickets, also benefiting the scholarship fund.
Music for the event will be provided by DJ Slicky D. For youngsters, the event will feature a bounce house to keep the little ones busy.
