Local Beat



This column is designed to give our local readers a place to put news and events that are important to them and others in the community.

Local news such as public meetings, luncheons, events and other non-club local items for not-for-profit associations are listed in this column. Entertainment-related announcements appear on the Lifestyles page.

Church events are printed separately in Church News published on Fridays.

Feb. 2

Barry Friends of Youth will hold a chili supper fund-raiser from 4 to 7 p.m. at Barry Methodist Church. On the menu will be chili, cornbread, crackers, Fritos, condiments, tea and cookies. Cost will be $6 for adults and $3 for kids. To-go trays will be available. Also, there will be a silent auction. The event will help raise money for the kids of Barry and their projects a the Navarro County Youth Exposition sale and auction March 29. The date for pig in the park will be May 3.



Richland Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual chili supper at 5 p.m. As always, the chili will be free and donations will be gladly accepted. You are invited to come out and join in for good food and fun.



Dawson Friends of Youth will have a bean and cornbread supper at 6 p.m. at the Dawson High School Cafeteria. Donations will be accepted. Also, there will be an auction with various items including cakes, pies and crafts. Proceeds will benefit Dawson area kids in 4-H and FFA for the Navarro County Youth Expo. Feb. 4

Corsicana Art League will meet at 6 p.m. at Caffe Gourmet, 129 W. Collin St. Attendees will be hanging paintings, and voting on logos and officers. The public is invited to attend.



City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthly city council meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce St.



Corsicana Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. to welcome the honorable district deputy, who will be making his official visit. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All masons are invited.



Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will meet at Westhill Church of Christ. Fellowship will begin at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. Committee chairmen need to come early as there will be a committee meeting at 9 a.m. The program for the 10 a.m. meeting will feature demonstrations of two techniques: a string quilt and chevron quilt. Members that wish to participate in the fabric exchange for these two techniques need to bring 21- to 22-inch long strips from 1 inch to 2.5 inches wide for the strip quilt and a fat quarter or a 1/4 yard cut selvedge to selvedge in straight striped fabric for the chevron quilt.



Feb. 5

Corsicana Chapter No. 118, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Corsicana Masonic Lodge. A potluck supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call Bonnie Mathison at (903) 874-0226.



Oak Valley Crime Watch will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Valley Community Center. All candidates that would like to speak to the group are welcome. The crime report will be given and there will be food and fellowship. Bring a dish and come join in.



Navarro College SBDC will sponsor a basic workshop on how to start a small business from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, 120 N. 12th St. Cost of the workshop will be $20. Feb. 6

Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at Eureka United Methodist Church. All political candidates seeking offices in the March primary election are invited to attend and will be given time to present their qualifications, etc. to everyone. The public is invited to take advantage of this opportunity to get better acquainted with incumbents and meet new candidates. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.



Feb. 7

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Shea Gore of Early Childhood Intervention for Navarro County. The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.



Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce will have its 90th annual banquet and awards ceremony from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Corsicana High School commons. The keynote speaker will be Jay Novacek, former Dallas Cowboys tight end. All tickets have been sold to this event.



North Central Texas WorkForce’s Corsicana Center will host a “Workshop Center Orientation” at 10 a.m. and a job search workshop on “Resume Preparation” at 10 a.m. at its office, 720 N. Beaton St. “WorkInTexas.com” training will be offered at 5:30 p.m. at the center, but seating is limited and you must pre-register for this training. For more information, call (903) 874-8276.



American Red Cross community blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Navarro Shriner’s Building, 323 N. Commerce St. Each donor will receive an American Red Cross T-shirt. Eat and drink well before donating and bring a photo ID. Donors must be in general good health, weigh 110 pounds or more, and be at least 17 years old. Navarro College SBDC will sponsor a central contractor registration workshop from 10 a.m. to noon at the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, 120 N. 12th St. A marketing overview workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., also at the Chamber. Navarro County Retired Teachers Association will meet at 9:45 a.m. at Northwest Apartments Community Center, 1360 N. 13th St. The speaker will be Danzell Lee, executive director of administration for Corsicana Independent School District. Door prizes, decorations and refreshments will be provided by Marianne Anderson, Marcie Braly, Winona Stewart, Katherine Marx and Freda Whiteside. President is Virginia Mays.

Navarro County NAACP will sponsor the second annual African-American health fair/expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave. If you would like to set up a booth or would like more information, call Barbara Kelley at (903) 872-7973 after 4 p.m.



287 Richland/Chambers Fire and Rescue Volunteer Fire Department will meet at 10 a.m. at the fire station, located 1/10 mile south of Spur 294 on U.S. Highway 287 (just before the bridge over the lake). Support members, firefighters, and anyone interested in being a volunteer, support member or firefighter are encouraged to attend. Corsicana High School cheerleader clinic will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the CHS gym. The clinic will be for students in kindergarten through sixth grade and will cost $15 per person. Cheers, chants, jumps and stunts will be taught and the participants will have the opportunity to cheer at the last CHS Tiger boys basketball game Feb. 11.     Texas Slabs’ jerky has issued a voluntary recall notice, effective Friday, according to proprietor Scott McGinty.
    The company makes flavored beef jerky and is headquartered out of Mansfield. Some of the jerky was distributed in Corsicana in January.
