Fifth grader Cody Carroll won grand champion honors in the Meat Goat Division of the 2008 Navarro County Youth Expo and Anna Calhoun earned reserve grand champion honors.
Competition was held Tuesday at the Navarro County Youth Exposition Center.
When Parks Tucker, the division judge from San Angelo, walked over to give Carroll the magic handshake, the shock was plain on his face.
“I can’t believe this,” the Collins Catholic student said afterward. “This goat, I just worked with him all summer and he was a grand champion at Gatesville in October. I was just afraid he washed out here.”
That proved to not be the case Tuesday. He also earned reserve grand champion for junior showmanship, just behind Justin Smith-Lopez of Rice FFA who took grand champion honors.
Cody is the son of Bob and Tammy Carroll and he competed as a member of the Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H.
Anna Calhoun, a Blooming Grove High School sophomore, was close behind with the reserve champion award. She also won the Senior Showmanship grand champion award.
“It was awesome, really exciting,” she said. “I got to know the goats and I got to know their flaws and how to show the ‘good’ out of them so they could do their best.”
She has been showing for seven years and this was the first time she won a class in goats. While it was her first senior showmanship championship, Anna already had the same award under her belt for junior showmanship competition during her prior years at the Expo here.
Anna is the daughter of Kyle and Gina Calhoun. She competed as a member of Blooming Grove FFA.
