Berry takes heifer win

Garrett Berry, 9, stood pressed up against the rails throughout all five judging events in the commercial heifer competition at the Navarro County Youth Expo Wednesday, and eventually walked away with the grand champion prize.

Berry, a member of Kerens FFA, said his animal didn’t have a name.

“She was just the best-looking heifer in the pasture and the right age,” he said, grinning.

Naomi Boyer’s heifer took the Reserve Champion.

Berry stood within a foot of the field’s previous reigning queen, Brett Butler, who won the commercial heifer competition nine times in the last nine years, until she went away to Texas A&M; University this past fall.

Butler was allowed to miss some college classes this week to come back and help with the Expo in her hometown, she explained.

Commercial heifers are judged differently from the registered heifers, which are halter-broken and groomed. The commercial heifers come into a pen alone, rough and hairy from the pasture, and are evaluated based on breeding potential.

Jason Banta of Overton judged the animals Wednesday. The ideal was a moderate-sized cow with tons of volume, potential for growth, longevity, and one that can be matched up with different bulls, depending on the herd goals, Banta explained.

He took into account the region’s heat and humidity, as well, since Brahman-cross cows tend to handle this region’s heat better, he said.

The commercial heifer competition also includes three other parts — record-keeping, a written exam, and an interview. The winners of the overall competition will be named Saturday.

The top three winners in each division were:

Class 1: Cole Harris, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H; and Jess Anderson, Corsicana 4-H (Anderson won second and third places). Class 2: Garrett Berry, Kerens FFA (only entrant). Class 3: Christian Dejean, Frost FFA, who won first and third, and Cole Harris, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H, who won second. Class 4: Naomi Boyer, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H; Jacob Boyer, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H; and Brandon McDowell, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H.
