Navarro County Animals at Risk Foundation meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of every month in the sunroom at Heritage Oaks West. Visitors and anyone interested in animal welfare are always welcome. NCARF is also collecting empty ink jet cartridges, empty laser cartridges and digital cell phones to be recycled. Money received from the recycling will help the homeless and neglected animals of Navarro County. Instead of just tossing these items away, save them and save the life of a deserving cat or dog. You can drop off your items at Sonda’s Doggie Doos, 817 N. Main St.; Today Homes, 1131 W. Seventh Ave.; or YMCA, 400 W. Oaklawn. For more information, call (903) 654-3668.



Navarro County Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteers to deliver meals for homebound clients. If you are interested in helping your community in this way, call (903) 641-0166 or (903) 229-1840.



Navarro County Reach to Recovery, a service offered free of charge, is a division of the American Cancer Society. Services provided include offering support by breast cancer survivors, literature, temporary breast prosthesis, wigs, exercise instruction for range of motion following surgery, and other support. The Salvation Army, 212 E. First Ave., is in need of diapers and formula for babies and infants. Also, when you clean out your closets and garages, The Salvation Army will accept your donations daily of gently used clothing, household items and furniture. For more information, call (903) 874-7131. The Salvation Army also has a need of volunteers to help others. Anyone willing to help may contact Maj. Also, on the second Tuesday of each month, Andrea Wooden will be in Corsicana to help with application assistance regarding the North Texas Food Stamp Outreach Program. Disaster Action Team (DAT) leaders are needed. The Corsicana branch of the American Red Cross is seeking experienced professionals to respond to local disasters. The branch is looking for individuals who have prior success in various aspects of management and/or have had success in leadership roles within the public and private sector. DAT meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at 701 W. Second Ave. Newcomers are welcome, and refreshments will be served. The branch is also looking for residents who can come and assist with client follow-up and data entry of current disaster cases. A calendar of events has been developed to post community wide/county wide events for local interests and traveling tourists. Navarro County Office of Emergency Management and Local Emergency Planning Committee has community-based information Web site, www.navarrocountyoem.org. The Web site is continually being updated with helpful information.



Area Agency on Aging of North Central Texas, Ombudsman Program, needs volunteers interested in advocating for residents in nursing facilities in Navarro County. No previous experience is required, 36 hours of training is provided, it takes only two to three hours per week and the hours are flexible. Ombudsmen (advocates) investigate and work to resolve complaints for or on behalf of the resident and work to educate residents and their families on residents’ rights. Shakers and Scrapers Car Club meets from 6:30 to 10 p.m. the second Friday of each month (March through November) at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2217 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Each month brings a variety of cars and spectators, as well as music, a 50/50 pot, and random door prizes. The cruise nights are weather permitting, and there are no make-up nights for them.



Basics for Living classes are held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every first and third Saturdays through May at Griffin Chapel Church of God in Christ, 709 E. 12th Ave., (903) 872-1840. The goal is motivate and inspire women of all ages to build themselves, their homes, church and community to the level that God will be pleased. Classes include Bible study and areas of special interest: beginners sewing/craft class, money management, parenting, eating healthy and purchasing items, i.e. cost vs. value.     Early voting will be held on the weekend from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday May 19, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, 300 W. Third Ave., Corsicana.

    The Navarro County Commissioners Court is scheduled to meet in special session at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the county courtroom of the Navarro County Courthouse.
    The meeting was moved from Monday, May 28, due to the Memorial Day holiday.

    The race for District 6
    After the redistricting conflicts that took nearly eight months and multiple lawsuits to resolve, a new congressional districts were carved out, but Navarro County remains in District 6 with incumbent Representative Joe Barton.
    However, Barton is facing his toughest challenge to his seat in more than a decade. He has four Republican opponents in the primary, and four Democrats are also vying for the seat in that primary.
    All the candidates in both parties were given the same questions and asked to submit their answers for Corsicana Daily Sun readers. These are the four responses we received.
