July 4

Corsicana Rotary Freedom Festival and 2008 Duck Dash will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at I.O.O.F. Park. The entire community is invited to come to this Fourth of July celebration. Bring your lawn chair and come for an evening of family fun. For more information, call Child Advocates at (903) 872-3772.



The 13th annual Kerens Old-Fashioned Fourth, sponsored by the Kerens Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held in downtown Kerens beginning at 6 p.m. Bring your decorated bike, trike, pet (on a leash), baby stroller, scooter, roller skates (use your imagination) and meet in front of the Kerens Chamber of Commerce for the parade. There will be a cake walk, train rides, horseshoe contest, washer pitching contest, bounce slide, cow plop bingo, raffles, live music, and lots more fun and games. Hot dog dinner will be $3, watermelon slices will be $1, and homemade ice cream will be $1. Fireworks will be at the baseball field after dark. July 5

RJ Productions will host a team sorting at the Navarro County Exposition Center. Practice will begin at 11 a.m. with events to begin at noon. Admission will be free to the public. For more information, call Ricky at (254) 379-1685.

Barry Volunteer Fire Department will have a barbecue dinner fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Meal will be brisket, sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, dessert and drink. Cost will be $8 for adults and $4 for kids. Take-out meals will be available.



July 6

July 7

A town hall meeting to discuss the United Way of Navarro County Community Assessment will be held at 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club building at 1000 East Fifth Avenue. Action groups are being formed to study solutions to the items identified in the Community Assessment. Everyone is welcome to attend and take part in the discussion.



Corsicana Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All masons are invited.



Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have an all-day quilting at Westhill Church of Christ. The guild will be working on “Quilts of Valor.” The quilters will have a fellowship at 9:30 a.m., a business meeting at 10 a.m. and will start quilting around 10:45 a.m. Those participating in the day workshop need to bring sewing machines, scissors and thread (white, beige or gray). July 8

Central Texas Quarter Horse Association will host a sorting at 6:30 p.m. at the Navarro County Exposition Center. It will be open to the public. For $20 you can ride as many times as you wish. For more information, call Steve at (903) 641-6844.



Corsicana Emergency Corps, 416 S. 12th St., will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. All members, any active volunteers who want to join, and any residents are invited to attend. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave. Membership is open to U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guests are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

Donors will be entered into a drawing for an Olympic sports bag, complete with Olympic sports gear, and American Airlines airfare for two. July 15-24

VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption, or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. There will be a choice of morning or afternoon sessions — from 9 to 11 a.m. or from 3 to 5 p.m. July 15, 17, 22 and 24. Classes are $80 (cash only) for all sessions. The CHS Calico Dance Officers are holding a fund-raising golf tournament beginning at 9 a.m. at the Oak Trail Golf Course. The tournament will be a four person scramble. Entry fees are $260 per team. Lunch will be provided. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places, longest drive and closest to the pin. Proceeds will help fund a trip for the Calicos to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. For more information or to register contact Mike Taylor at (903) 872-7117.



A benefit for Bruce Holman will be held beginning at 5 p.m. at Frost City Park. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, silent and live auction, live music featuring JJ Bratcher. Holman, a former resident of Frost and son of William and Linda Meskiman, was severely injured in an accident April 26. He will have many months of physical therapy. You are invited to come support Holman and his family. Also, a bank account has been established for donations at Community National Bank and Trust. Donations may be made to “Frost Volunteer Fire Department for Bruce Holman” at the Frost, Streetman and Fairfield bank locations, or at either of the two Corsicana locations.



The 110th Masonic District will have officer installation at 2 p.m. at the Corsicana Masonic Lodge. The Eastern Star ladies will serve refreshments after the ceremony. The public is invited.



July 22

Community Resource Council of the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center (Corsicana State Home) will have its seventh annual celebrity wait from 5 to 9 p.m. at Napoli’s, 111 E. Collin St. Tips received will go toward incentives for students at the CRTC. Funds raised can be used for graduation gifts, birthday cakes, small gifts, travel funds for family members, and various other things that the state does not pay for. You are invited to come support the resource council in this fund-raising endeavor.



Black Hills Cemetery Association will have its annual fund-raiser at Retreat Community Building, located on Farm-to-Market Road 709. The event will start at 1 p.m. there will be alight lunch served at a cost of $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 8. There will be a raffle for quilt, quartet singers, handmade crafts, homemade cakes, pies, canned jellies and pickles, and much more will be auctioned. Warehouse Living Arts Center’s Corsicana Children’s Company’s ninth annual theatre camp will be held. “Act and Seek” for kindergarten through second grade will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at a cost of $55. “Imagination Station” for third through fifth grades will meet from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at a cost of $58.50. Students will need a sack lunch. “Innovative Imagineers” for sixth through eighth grades and from ninth to 12th grades will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. at a cost of $65. Cost for each class will include a T-shirt and a snack. Season-ticket holders and multiple family registrations will get a 10-percent discount.   • Grand Jury indicts 50

    The Navarro County Grand Jury returned 50 indictments Thursday, according to District Attorney Lowell Thompson.
    Four of the indictments were for Michael Edward Shimonek, Jr., accused of drug possession, theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Thompson.
    In addition, the grand jury indicted Jerry Lee Vaughn with possession of a controlled substance, aggravated assault and evading arrest with a vehicle.
    An indictment is a finding that there is enough evidence to proceed to a trial, but does not declare anyone guilty or innocent.

    When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
    But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
    Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.

  • Schools ready for summer

    With a nearly balmy winter, local school districts faced the end of the year with so-called “snow days” still in their pockets. Corsicana schools will spend one of those bad weather days Monday, taking off Memorial Day.
    The other free day was spent on April 9, the Monday after Easter.
    “We called it Good Friday, Better Monday,” said Susan Johnson, spokeswoman for the district.
