Sheriff receives national award
From Staff Reports
Thomas Sheriff, Ph.D., received the Professional Advisor Service Award at the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) 2008 National Conference held in Norfolk, Va., Sept. 10-14. Members of the local chapter attending the DBSA National Conference were honored to receive this award in his name.
Sheriff has served as chapter professional advisor to the Navarro County DBSA chapter since the organizational meeting in 2005. A clinical psychologist practicing privately, he has worked with the county mental health agency and has consulted for an alcoholism treatment center. He has also treated patients with such conditions as strokes and spinal cord injuries at the rehabilitation unit at Navarro Regional Hospital and has treated patients with chronic unremitting pain at a center in Fort Worth. A member of the Texas Psychological Association and American Psychological Association, he maintains a commitment to reading the latest trends in professional journals and believes in the DBSA mission which is “To improve the lives of people living with mood disorders.”
Sheriff has promoted the National Depression Screening Day annual event to his clients and to mental health providers. In October of each year, he volunteers his time to review mental health self-assessments for people of all ages suffering with undiagnosed, untreated mood disorders and connects those in need with appropriate treatment and support services. This year’s event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at the Corsicana Public Library. It will be sponsored by Navarro County DBSA and Texas AgriLife Extension of Navarro County.
Of significant effectiveness, Sheriff conducts a monthly study of “The Depression Workbook, A Guide for Living with Depression and Manic Depression” by Mary Ellen Copeland, M.S., M.A. This first Tuesday study has attracted new members to the local DBSA chapter.
Sheriff was recognized for his professional dedication to individuals and families living with mood disorders. He was also recognized as a champion in prevention, wellness and recovery.
