Oct. 7

Oct. 8

Fields of Faith will be held at 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana, sponsored by Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This is national event for all youth, their parents and friends. There is no admission fee. The local youth-led event, will have Kingdom Minded Ministries leading the praise and worship music, scripture will be read by Jill Edling, Natalie Horton, Katie Vineyard, Taylor Jacobson and Coby Duren, youth will give testimonies, etc. All area youth church groups are encouraged to attend, as well as the general public. A blood drive with Carter BloodCare will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by Dawson High School, 199 N. School Ave., in the band hall. The event will be open to the public. Oct. 10

A national depression screening day event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library, 100 N. Main St. The public is invited to attend. There will be free, anonymous screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. As part of the program, attendees will have the opportunity to complete a brief questionnaire and talk to a health professional about their results. The event will be sponsored by the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and the Family and Consumer Sciences of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Navarro County. Senior Circle, a Navarro Regional Hospital sponsored program committed to enriching the lives of adults age 50 and better, will have “lunch and learn” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the hospital classrooms. Bring a casserole or dessert of your choice for the lunch. Dr. Syed will speak on cancer awareness. Bingo will follow. For more information, call (903) 654-6802.



Navarro Regional Hospital will host a car wash fund-raiser for The United Way from 1 to 4 p.m. at the hospital. Hospital administrators and directors will be hand washing cars and trucks at the charity event. Cost for cars will range from $5 to $10, while trucks will range from $10 to $12.



Oct. 10-12

The 51st annual Pelham community homecoming will be held Oct. 10-12. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Brown Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Charles Kelly as master of ceremonies; from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 11 with the Pelham High School Alumni Day, fun and frolic, family and friends activities at Pelham Community History Museum — food, drinks, games, prizes, jump fun, hay ride, music, Panther country store and raffle. Bring your lawn chairs. Museum will be open for tours. Homecoming worship services will be at 10:45 a.m. Oct. 12 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Minister R.D. Pace Sr. from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Dallas and music by George Wilson and the Male Chorus. Dinner will follow at Pelham Community Center. Contributions will be welcomed. Oct. 11

Navarro County Animals at Risk Foundation will sponsor a low-cost pet vaccination clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Farmers Market, located on Business 45, next to the Corsicana Daily Sun. Dr. John Beck, DVM, will be the attending veterinarian. All dogs must be on a leash and all cats must be in a carrier. For more information, call (903) 875-1808.



Mildred Fire Department will have its annual fund-raiser. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the music of Ira Bradford and Bustin’ Loose Band. A brisket dinner with all the trimmings will begin at 5 p.m. The band will start at 7 p.m. There will also be a silent auction, raffle and door prizes. Come enjoy the fun.



St. Elmo Cemetery Association will have its annual cake auction and hot dog supper at 6 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church fellowship hall. For more information, call (903) 599-2462.



Coyote Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force will meet at the Tucker Hardgrave Memorial Hangar at the Corsicana Municipal Airport. Staff meeting will be at 10 a.m. with the squadron meeting at 10:30 a.m. The public is welcome to attend the squadron meeting. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend the squadron meeting. A meal will be served.



Pursley Volunteer Fire Department, 9772 Farm-to-Market 709 South, will have a fund-raiser at 4 p.m. There will be a brisket supper and a raffle to win a $250 Wal-Mart gift card. Free gifts for the first 60 adults, free surprise gifts for the kids and an auction to follow supper. You are invited to come out and see your fire department and support the volunteer firefighters.



Oct. 11-12

Items to be donated to Hurricane Ike survivors such as clothing, bedding, towels and non-perishable foods will be collected from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3000 W. State Highway 22. Distribution point will be Sacred Heart Church in Galveston.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. Texas Supreme Court Justice Dale Wainwright will be the keynote speaker at a regional rally to be held at 7 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, 100 N. 12th St. The rally is sponsored by the Republican Party of Navarro County. Wainwright became the first non-incumbent African-American in the history of the state to be elected to the Texas Supreme Court. Wainwright graduated from Howard University (summa cum laude) in 1983 and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988. He studied at the London School of Economics in Great Britain in 1981 as the laurd scholar. Other local Republican officials and candidates will be invited to speak. Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce invites you to the third annual member reception and fund-raiser from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Cook Center. Cost will be $15 per person, and non-members are welcome. The Oktoberfest theme will include, German style hors d’oeuvres, desserts and beverages. Oct. 17

Corsicana High School Cheerleaders will host their annual Tiger tailgate party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the high school parking lot. Join in for hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink. Mascots, Tiki and T-bone look forward to visiting you before the Corsicana vs. Ennis football game. You are invited to come support your CHS cheerleaders and have fun tailgating with friends and family. The $5 tickets may be purchased from any CHS cheerleader, mascot or at the party.



Oct. 17-19

James L. Collins Catholic School’s eighth annual fund-raiser, “Bucks, Blues, Barbecue and Casino,” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Collins Catholic gym featuring the Loki band. Cost will be $30 per person, or $15 per person for take-out meals. There will be dancing, spirit and casino fun. Raffle tickets are $1 and drawings will be held all evening. Oct. 20

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave., will serve breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21, 23, 28 and 29. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. There will be snacks, information on signing up for the program and prizes. VOICE will offer this free program to Hispanic families and children at the Kerens Library beginning Oct. 28 for four weeks twice per week. Flu vaccines will be administered from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Dawson, located on North Main and Fourth streets, sponsored by the church and Dawson Young at Heart. Providence Home Health Care of Waco will administer shots. There will be no cost for immunizations to Medicare insured and with a Medicare card and another ID. Providence Home Health Care nurses will make decisions relating to age and/or health conditions for recipients.



Oct. 25

The 11th annual Scarecrow Stroll will be held on Northwest Third Street in Hubbard. Residents along this street decorate their yards with scarecrows and other fall decorations. The street will be blocked off to drive-through traffic from 5 to 7 p.m., so you may stroll down this street and visit with residents and view their fall decorations. A job readiness program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Kerens Library. Stuart Schoppert, manager of the Corsicana office of Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas, will be the speaker. He will include tips on interview skills, dressing for success, and how to fill out a job application. The program will be free and open to both students and adults. This will be the first of series of programs on career choices for residents of the Kerens area.



Oct. 25-26

Central Texas Quarter Horse Association will host a 5D speed barrel race weekend at the Navarro County Exposition Center. Win a saddle or buckle. Barrel exhibitions will begin at 11 a.m. with youth 4D to begin not before 3 p.m. followed by open 5D. Pole exhibitions to follow, youth 3D poles, open 3D poles (jackpot only). Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have its 28th annual quilt show at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Quilts will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission will be free. On Oct. 29, there will be a drawing for the PQG 2008 donation quilt. The winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and may be purchased until the drawing. Several classes and demos will be given during the show, which will be open to the public. PQG members can participate in hand quilting the donation quilt for next year.
