Council approves dance hall zoning

The Corsicana City Council revisited the issue of dance halls and social clubs when it met in regular session Tuesday night. The Council voted unanimously to approve zoning rules for the clubs, which will allow them in most areas of the city, although some areas will require a special use permit.

Council woman Ruby Williams expressed some concern that the dance hall/social hall ordinance will unduly burden the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, but she was assured the center is not considered either a dance hall or social hall.

The council also approved a change to the cemetery fees, requiring a $50 internment fee for cremations. The usual burial charge is $200. The reason for the lower fee is because a cremation is only allowed an 18-inch square, and requires much less maintenance, explained City Manager Connie Standridge.

The council made an amendment to the Fair Housing rules, to allow the city to qualify for some state grants, and it passed a resolution to pursue a grant from the state for airport improvements, such as security gates and a new windsock. The city’s part of the grant will be about $38,000. The money has already been set aside in the city budget for the airport, Standridge told the council.
