Corsicana Fire Department will accept new unwrapped toys from Dec. 1 through Christmas for its 23rd annual Christmas for Kids. The toys will be given to The Salvation Army for distribution. If so desired, financial donations will also be accepted to purchase toys for the children. Drop-off locations will be at the city’s four fire stations: 200 N. 13th St., 310 S. Second St., 2212 W. When Are We Going Home Ministry will present the annual Cheryl Dunn concert at 6:45 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, 112 W. Sixth Ave. The pre-concert will be by The Way, Truth and Life Praise Team from Ennis followed by Glorybound. The concert will be free. There will be a silent auction to benefit the ministry in its efforts to help families who have children with medical challenges and special needs by building a retreat and therapeutic center in Navarro County which will include aquatic, equine, music, fitness and creative. Dunn, the 2003 and 2005 winner of the Canadian Country/Bluegrass Album of the Year, has been nominated three times for the Covenant Awards and four times for the Vibe Awards. Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at Eureka United Methodist Church. A Christmas party will follow a short business meeting and an update on the Christmas project. Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the home of Jean Hinkle, 404 Hinckley, Blooming Grove. The speakers will be retired sheriff deputies Jimmie Spencer and Bubba Jones. Refreshments will be served.
Corsicana/Navarro County Public Health District, 618 N. Main St., will have an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. celebrating 10 years being at this location. There will be refreshments, tours available, as well as medical questions answered. The public is invited to come celebrate the 10th year anniversary in this facility, which houses three clinics — Women’s, Infants and Children’s programs; Pedia Child Health Clinic; and the Health Department.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with application and dues. Members and guests are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.
Corsicana High School Choir will have a fund-raiser from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Bookstack, 1427 W. Second Ave. Memories by Melissa will be set up and taking pictures of children with Santa. Two 4-by-6 photos will be $15 with a portion of the profit going to the choir. Choir students will also be selling hot chocolate and cookies. Proceeds will go toward the choir’s spring break trip to New York.

VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption, or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9, 11, 16 and 18. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. Former Mildred school leader passes
Doug Lane, who was superintendent of schools at Mildred Independent School District for 24 years until retiring in 2011, died Sunday at a hospital in Tyler. He was 70 years old.
