Corsicana Art League will meet at 6 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center. Bobbie Ross will give a lecture on the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and will include a video of her work and Mexican art. All are invited to attend.
City of Blooming Grove will hold its monthly city council meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce St.

Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will meet at the Westhill Church of Christ at 9:30 a.m. for fellowship and refreshments. The business meeting will start at 10 a.m. After the business meeting Joanie Tell will present a class on Locking Hook Technique. Class participants will need to bring one-inch fabric strips 11-33 inches long and 36-inch length cotton strings. Hooks and any needed materials will be available for purchase. More information on this class and the activities for the day will be sent to members by e-mail. Also, members who still need to have their pictures made for the Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Pictorial Directory may have their pictures taken at this January meeting. Those staying for “sit and sew” may bring their lunches, order out, or go out and eat. Sit and Sew will start about 1 p.m. As always, guests are welcome to attend all or part of any of the activities.

Special guest will be Bob Pritchett from the Tarrant County Regional Water District office who will discuss the status of “the Wetlands” project. If prior schedules permit, a second speaker from the Water District will discuss the pros and cons of power plants on Richland-Chambers Reservoir resources. The public is invited to attend this informative meeting. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

Navarro County NAACP will commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a rally/march/oratory contest. The rally will be held at Bunert Park at 10 a.m. Walter Berringer, assistant principal of Corsicana High School, will be the speaker. Immediately following the rally, the group will march to the MLK Center. The oratory contest will begin at noon. MLK Day will be celebrated with a citywide candlelight musical beginning at 7 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church. The main focus will be praise and worship ministry singing and praise dancing. Former Mildred school leader passes
Doug Lane, who was superintendent of schools at Mildred Independent School District for 24 years until retiring in 2011, died Sunday at a hospital in Tyler. He was 70 years old.
