City hires Dieterichs for tourism post

From Staff Reports

The City of Corsicana has hired Steve Dieterichs as its new tourism and promotions coordinator, it was announced Monday morning.

Dieterichs is a resident of Kerens and formerly worked as the Spanish teacher at Kerens High School. He began with the school as a substitute. Prior to working at Kerens, he worked for the City of Arlington in its public relations office, where he was responsible for the employee newsletter and public service announcements for the city.

More recently, he has been working as a free-lance reporter with the weekly Navarro County Times.

Dieterichs has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas A&M; University and went onto pursue his masters in international studies at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. He was an intern with the U.S. State Department in Brussells, Belgium in 1993.

As part of his background, Dieterichs ran Pendulum Artist Services, where he assisted small business start-ups in the entertainment and public speaking industry.

The position he’ll fill was once held by Wendy Huffman, who resigned last fall to go to work for her family’s firm. The city decided to expand the post in to a full-time position, and have the new hiree also do public relations work for the city in addition to the tourism duties.

“I applaud the City for investing resources for this expanded position,” said Dieterichs. “I feel confident and enthused about the possibilities for promoting the City and all it has to offer for visitors and residents.”

Dieterichs will office in the Visitors Center and work under the leadership of Malinda Payne-Sharpley, Director of Heritage Preservation and Main Street.

“Steve will be an asset to our City,” she said. “Corsicana has such unique character and charm. I know we will certainly benefit from his experience and expertise.”

The newly expanded coordinator position of Tourism and Promotions will include representing Corsicana in various publications, actively recruiting new visitors to the City, coordinating efforts with local events and publicity, and continuing the development of new materials to market Corsicana. The money for his salary will come from the hotel/motel tax fund, according to Connie Standridge, city manager.

Dieterichs has been in involved with Navarro County Meals on Wheels, Corsicana Chamber Ambassadors, Kerens Kiwanis Club, Kerens Chamber of Commerce, Derrick Days Committee, and the Navarro County Texas A&M; Club.

Steve’s wife, Gina, works for VOICE, Inc. as the Marketing Director. They reside in Kerens.
