Brrrracing for the storm

Area prepares for possible ice accumulations, cold weather

The threat of ice storms and below-freezing weather was enough to cancel some Tuesday night events, and send folks shopping late Tuesday afternoon in Corsicana.

A volunteer appreciation dinner for volunteers with the Navarro County extension office, also known as AgriLIFE, was canceled along with the Warehouse Living Arts Center’s annual meeting and awards ceremony. The Warehouse meeting was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. The AgriLIFE meeting and awards will be rescheduled later, said Paula Butler, extension agent.

The National Weather Service was predicting freezing rain and sleet from 6 p.m. until midnight Tuesday for Navarro County, brought on by a vicious Arctic front moving through Texas.

Brett Reagan, who lives near Emhouse in Navarro County, was stocking up on dog food Tuesday afternoon at the Tractor Supply as cold winds swept in from the north.

“I’m just making sure I’ve got enough,” Reagan explained.

Although possible thunderstorms and icy conditions are predicted, the rain should stop again by mid-morning Wednesday.

As much as a tenth of an inch of ice could accumulate on bridges and overpasses, and drivers are urged to use caution on highways.

Temperatures will begin to rise by Thursday, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s. The weekend will also be warmer, with highs in the 60s and partly cloudy skies.

Lists of any closings or cancellations as a result of inclement weather will be posted on our online newspaper, www.corsicanadailysun.com.

    The Navarro County Commissioners Court is scheduled to meet in special session at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, in the county courtroom of the Navarro County Courthouse.
    The meeting was moved from Monday, May 28, due to the Memorial Day holiday.

    The race for District 6
    After the redistricting conflicts that took nearly eight months and multiple lawsuits to resolve, a new congressional districts were carved out, but Navarro County remains in District 6 with incumbent Representative Joe Barton.
    However, Barton is facing his toughest challenge to his seat in more than a decade. He has four Republican opponents in the primary, and four Democrats are also vying for the seat in that primary.
    All the candidates in both parties were given the same questions and asked to submit their answers for Corsicana Daily Sun readers. These are the four responses we received.
