The chips seems to fall right for Tammy Broome.

Her route to Corsicana and the newspaper business has been one chance happening after another.

“Pure luck! And I absolutely mean that,” was how she described getting into the newspaper business. “How many people go to work each day and think they are lucky to be doing what it is they do?”

Broome joined the Corsicana Daily Sun and exp the Magazine Monday after spending the last two-plus years as director of advertising sales for the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel, Miss. Both papers are owned by Birmingham, Ala.-based Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. (cnhi).

“I had never worked for a newspaper when I was hired as a sales rep (in Laurel),” she said. “I did have somewhat of a background with my education, but no hands-on training in the field. After being there only eight weeks, the publisher took a chance with my abilities and promoted me to director of advertising.

“And here I am, two and a half years later, now in Corsicana, with the same company still loving every minute of it.”

Broome has a Bachelors of Art, Communication, with an emphasis in Public Relations from Mississippi State University in Starkville. She is a staunch MSU Bulldogs fan.

She also is a staunch believer in getting results with her clients.

“First and foremost advertising is branding, creating a face to a name to sell something,” she said. “That something can be a physical item or it can be just an idea. We believe that if it does not benefit the client, in the end, it will not benefit us either.”

The move to Corsicana actually began in November, when Broome and Daily Sun Publisher Raymond Linex II met at a sales conference in Dallas. Another chance meeting after the Dallas conference had Broome thinking this area was right for her.

“When I took this position I knew as much (about Corsicana) as a physician could tell me on a flight from Dallas to New Orleans,” she said. “I met Raymond during a corporate meeting in Dallas where we initially began discussing the position in Corsicana. When I boarded the flight in Dallas to return home, I was the last passenger to board and there was only one seat left. Low and behold I sat next to a dermatologist from Corsicana who was happy to discuss the community with me, and even provided his clinic manager’s cell phone number for future conversations just in case.”

After weeks of talks, a deal was struck in December for a February start.

“We are thrilled to have Tammy here,” Linex said. “She’s driven, she’s bright and she’s experienced in all avenues of sales, and that’s the type of leadership we’ve missed here for almost a year. We believe the Daily Sun, exp and the community are fortunate to have her.”

Broome and her husband Lonnie, and sons Trevor, 5, and Parker, 2, have taken up residence near Richland Chambers Reservoir. She would like to eventually be a publisher.
