Construction began Monday to rebuild East 12th Avenue in Corsicana from Seventh Street to 12th Street on the south side of the city.
The project will take about six months to complete, according to Elizabeth Borstad, city engineer.
Twelfth and its cross-streets will be closed to traffic for the next six months. Other than Business 45, Main Street will be the only road open for through traffic along that stretch.
When completed, the concrete avenue should look like the new West 13th Avenue, near Oil City Iron Works. The 13th Avenue project was paid for with grant money about two years ago.
The project is a part of the bond package approved by voters in 2007, and will eventually incorporate several repair and reconstruction projects throughout the city.
The following streets will receive concrete reconstruction, along with drainage and curbs. Some of the streets will also receive sidewalks.
• West 13th Avenue, from South 31st Street to South 15th Street.
• North 24th Street from West Seventh Avenue to Bowie Drive.
• Collin Street, from 31st Street to 20th Street.
• East 13th Avenue, from South Seventh to Bunert.
• West Second Avenue, from North 45th to North 37th.
• Park Row, from S. 45th Street to South 37th Street.
• Dobbins Road, from 26th to Forrest Lane.
• Forrest Lane, from Dobbins Road to Beaton.
Two semi-rural roads, the Roane Road and South 15th Street — will be upgraded from broken concrete slabs to “heavy duty” asphalt roads, similar to farm-to-market roads. Once repaired, the state would be petitioned to take over maintenance of those roads.
Navarro Road, which leads to the airport, will receive a resurfacing and seal coat.
The city intends to spend about $17 million on street reconstruction using bond money approved by voters back in fall of 2007.
