James Blair Chapter, DAR

On March 15, at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, a special monument was dedicated for soldiers of the American Revolution who came to Texas with their families and died in the state of Texas. Lynn F. Young, TSDAR state regent, stated that the role that Texans played in the American Revolution is not widely understood or recognized.

Several members of James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and guests attended this special recognition of ancestors. Members of James Blair Chapter attending included regent Geneva Duncan Davis, Frances Hodge Jones, and Gelene Duncan Simpson. Special American Revolution descendants recognized by James Blair Chapter were Marlene Rouse Ivy of Fairfield, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Allen of Victoria, and Marjorie Rouse Willard of Richland Hills, whose ancestor, Bailey Anderson, was listed as the second name on the monument. Other guests included Robert N. Jones Jr., son of Frances Jones, whose relation Alexander Hodge was listed on the monument.

During the review of a few of the patriots by TSDAR state historian Martha Hartzog, Bailey Anderson was mentioned as a soldier in the South Carolina Militia, later a state legislator in 1800 in Kentucky and a soldier in the Texas Revolution as well. Alexander Hodge was also recognized as a member of Austin’s Colony in 1826 who later, at the age of 76, led the women and children in the Runaway Scrape near San Jacinto.

Assisting Hartzog were TSDAR member researchers and numerous genealogy researchers who have written county histories describing their early Texas pioneers. At the dedication ceremony, Jerry Patterson, Texas state land commissioner, praised the TSDAR society and reminded the attendees that the archives are available to Texans as they currently research their pioneer ancestors.

Members and guests are invited to the next local meeting of the James Blair Chapter, DAR, which will be at 3 p.m. April 8 at Kinsloe House in Corsicana. The subject will be women’s issues with speaker Gina Dieterichs of VOICE. Hostesses for the meeting will be Dorothy Bergey, Martha Chilbert, Gladys Best, Sandra Lewis, and Maude Rushing. The program chairman is Betty Partain.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is an historical genealogical heritage organization open to female descendants of American patriots who served or gave service to the American government during the American Revolutionary War. Thomas Meredith Chapter

Woman’s Club House Association

Kinsloe House will be pleased to present landscape designer Pamela Carroll, who will present a program on designing your flower beds with Texas shrubs and flowers.

If you’ve ever wondered how your flower beds got in the condition they are, or if you’re tired of them and don’t know what to do, come to Kinsloe House at noon April 1 to hear the presentation the flower committee, headed by Beverly White, presents which should interest anyone who has a house and flower beds and wants something different.

Carroll will have many fascinating and interesting ideas on how to use the many flowers and bushes that grow nearby to make colorful flower beds. Texas has many flowers and shrubs that come up wild and can be domesticated to fit in any yard to give fragrance and color and will actually last through Texas’ weird and unusual weather.

The yards will bring much pleasure year after year. They will be easy enough to do so that anyone can do them. You will be surprised the flowers and plants that go together. She will show you how to make everything easy.

The culminating activity will be either making a door stopper out of plants or a container arrangement that is easy to do. This will turn out to be the door prize. Come and bring your friends for an enjoyable meal and a delightful program.

Corsicana Newcomers Club

Corsicana Newcomers Club will meet at 11 a.m. March 26 at Kinsloe House. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The program will be Todd Jones and Janet Martin singing songs from “I Do, I Do,” the play opening that night at the Palace Theatre. Also during lunch, Jamie Kitchens and Donna Hillis will tell about the upcoming Navarro County Relay for Life, how to participate and the entertainment scheduled for this year’s event.
