Car show raises $9,600 for VOICE

A little intermittent rain didn’t hamper the turnout for the sixth annual Shakers and Scrapers Car Show.

“We had 204 registered cars, about 40 member cars, so we had roughly 250 cars for the show this year, which is about 100 more than last year,” said co-organizer Sue Moreau of the Shakers and Scrapers Car Club.

The club raised $9,600 which will be donated to VOICE (Viable Options in Community Endeavors) T.O.O.L. program during the one-day car show.

Club choice winner was Floyd Rutledge with his ‘50 Chevy Truck. Best in show went to John Henderson for his silver and white ‘56 Chevy. Police Choice was Raymond Trujillo for his ‘57 Chevy. The long distance award went to Kenneth Leach for his ‘55 Shelby, and Real-Steel Rodders of Fort Worth, who brought 11 cars, won the club participation award.

Top five winners were Bob and Deborah Shaffer and their 1940 Ford 2-door sedan; Velvin Carter with his 1934 Buick 4-door sedan; Rita Danford with her black 1935 Buick; Helen Snider and her red and white 1958 Corvette; and Raymond Trujillo for his red ‘57 Chevy.

Trujillo made the trip to Corsicana for the first time from Meridian, along with friends Rene Maldonado and his 2004 Corvette from Cleburne, Fermin Maldonado, and Dale Patrick of Cranfills Gap who brought his 1975 “Hooters” Fiat.

“It’s a nice show,” Trujillo said. “We like it, and we will come back next year.”

“I like the way it is set up, and people can walk by and see the cars,” Rene Maldonado agreed. “There are a lot of people here.”

Of Patrick’s car, the men said it was already orange when he purchased it, so he built the Hooters theme around it. The gentlemen enjoyed sitting on the sidewalk, watching passersby react to the car, which had T-shirts with hooters covering the seats, and a wooden Hooters “application” board.

“This is a great turnout, good bands, and that girl singing all that country music is good,” said Fermin Maldonado. “Good turkey legs, funnel cakes, and a lot of car clubs here, too.

“How come Bo Roberts isn’t here?”
