Steps to prevent the spread of swine flu

As the flurry of news from all media regarding the swine flu becomes larger, the Navarro County Health Department has taken steps to address the problem locally.
In a letter from Dr. Kent Rogers, physician and medical director of the Corsicana -Navarro County Public Health District, residents are strongly urged to help prevent the spread of swine flu. Rogers lists in his letter some steps to take as precautions.
1) Be alert for signs of illness in your household, such as fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, sore throat, coughing, runny nose, stomach ache (nausea), vomiting and diarrhea. If someone gets sick, the best advice is to stay home to prevent spreading flu to the rest of the community. If one person if your household is sick, all household members should stay home as well. You should also contact your doctor or health care providers for advice should these symptoms develop.
2) Hand-washing is known to be a very effective way of preventing the spread of swine flu as well as many other diseases. A good way to wash hands is to use soapy water and wash all surfaces of hands and also between the fingers and backs of the hands. Rogers recommends washing hands for at least 20 seconds. If you are not near water, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner. Be sure to let the hand cleaner dry completely.
3) Another effective way to prevent the spread of disease is to cover coughs and sneezes by either using the crook of your elbow of using a disposable tissue. If you use a tissue, it is wise to wash your hands after properly disposing of the tissue.
“At this time we have no confirmed cases of swine flu in Corsicana/Navarro County,” Rogers said. “Local city and county officials will continue to monitor conditions locally as well as information from state and federal agencies.”
Emily Carroll, head nursing administrator, said the Corsicana-Navarro County Public Health District is participating in daily conference calls with the Center for Disease Control as well as the Department of Texas Health Services, in order to monitor activity with swine flu. For more information, contact 1-888-777-5320, which is the swine flu information hotline.
“They are in the process of changing the name from swine flu, to the North American influenza,” Carroll said. “We are doing our very best to be prepared, which involves the whole medical community. The schools are being contacted, and we’ve had calls from local businesses regarding precautionary measures.
“The main thing is properly disposing of tissues, and stay home if you are sick.”
