To celebrate National Hospital Week, Navarro Regional Hospital celebrated with the usual treats, dinner, prizes and a special breakfast for employees, but they also made it into a community event by collecting food for the hungry.
In 2008, hospital employees collected stuffed animals and donated them to the local fire departments to distribute. This year, it was about stocking the Food Pantry of Navarro County, a non-profit agency that provides food to people in need.
The employees of the hospital and doctor’s offices collected more than a ton of food, ranging from baby formula, to bottled water, fruit juice, cereals, tinned tuna, flour, sugar, condiments, peanut butter, fruit, chili, soup, macaroni and even spices.
“A Healthy Commitment In Changing Times” was the theme of the drive, and it was a competition among departments. The top winners were the office of Dr. Joe Saucedo, which collected 317.63 pounds of food, or nearly 80 pounds per person in the office to win the most per person, and the Diagnostic Services department, which collected the most as a group.
On Friday, Larry Propes of the Navarro County Food Pantry picked up 2,475 pounds of food from where it was stacked, packed and arranged in towers and castles in the cafeteria.
In addition to the two-week food drive, the hospital also handed out T-shirts to the staff, and celebrated long-term employees at a special dinner at the Corsicana Country Club. On Wednesday, the hospital hosted a staff breakfast with omelets made by Chief Executive Officer Xavier Villarreal and Chief Financial Officer Marco Rodriguez.
