The Corsicana City Council approved a new five-year contract with Allied Waste Services for trash disposal in the city when the council met in regular session Tuesday.
The city has been negotiating with Allied and its competitors in the garbage collection business for more than a year. The company’s current contract is set to expire on Oct. 1.
Councilman Tom Wilson will chose the color of the plastic bins. Each resident may choose whether they want 65-gallon bins, or 95-gallon bins.
The contract will be for once-weekly pickup and a recycling pickup, as well as leaf and brush disposal. The price charged to the city will also go up 21 percent. It’s unclear how much of that increase the city will pass along to residents.
Originally, the contract called for once-weekly pickup of leaves, up to 16 bags, but Stephen Andrews recommended once every two week pickups with no limits of bags, which Allied agreed to on the spot.
“If you do 16 bags and charge for the rest, you’re still picking them up,” said Reid Donaldson, area municipal business development manager for Allied Waste. “It’s just not worth (the bookkeeping). Just make it as seamless as possible. Just make it disappear.”
For the purposes of leaf collection, Allied will divide the city into two districts, and collect one district per week, Donaldson said.
“I understand some houses have 100 bags,” Donaldson told the council. “We’re prepared to pick those up.”
The city also approved a landfill agreement with Allied, and a commercial franchise agreement with the company. Under the commercial/industrial trash collection agreement, the city gives Allied exclusive rights to all the commercial trash collection and will collect 10 percent of the commercial fees, according to City Manager Connie Standridge.
Allied and its predecessors have collected trash in Corsicana since 1996, according to Laura Capehart, sales rep for Allied in Corsicana.

Candidate Q&A: U.S. Representative, District 6
The race for District 6
After the redistricting conflicts that took nearly eight months and multiple lawsuits to resolve, a new congressional districts were carved out, but Navarro County remains in District 6 with incumbent Representative Joe Barton.
However, Barton is facing his toughest challenge to his seat in more than a decade. He has four Republican opponents in the primary, and four Democrats are also vying for the seat in that primary.
All the candidates in both parties were given the same questions and asked to submit their answers for Corsicana Daily Sun readers. These are the four responses we received.
