Helping those who help others

Volunteers from around the state gathered Thursday at The Salvation Army building to help those who help others in the community. The Mission Possible youth group comprised of students from five different Catholic churches in Texas, spent the entire week going to different towns and giving a helping hand to their communities.

“Our group represents the southern region of Catholic churches, that includes Corsicana, Ennis, Ferris, Duncanville, Lancaster and Grand Prairie,” group leader Neen Ponto said. “The southern region youth group contains about 80 kids. This is the last day of the project, we were in Duncanville Monday, Grand Prarie Tuesday and Waxahacie Wednesday.

Team Osomo—pronounced Awesome-o—was the group name of the eight kids that were helping at The Salvation Army in Corsicana. They helped sort through donations and separated summer and winter clothes. Among the more interesting finds were a pair of nunchucks which group leaders disposed of properly.

Kyler Makkouti, 15, said this was his third year to volunteer and he enjoyed helping the community and churches that surround his hometown of Duncanville. “I love taking time out of my life to donate my heart and soul to the people around me,” said Makkouti.

“I love Mission Possible because it helps so many people and that’s what I’m about,” said 15-year -old Terrance Zachary.

Erika Castillo, 13, said she likes making new friends and feels sorry for people who can’t afford what they need.

The Salvation Army is located at 212 E. First Ave. in Corsicana. For more information about volunteer work or donations call (903) 874-7131.
