Praise in the Park to fill Bunert Park Saturday

Praise in the Park will be held at 6 p.m. June 27 at Bunert Park, sponsored by Single Believers Ministries and Corsicana Parks and Recreation Department. The event will feature recording artist Tommye Young West of Dallas, emcee Evangelist James Henderson of God’s Property/Kirk Franklin, New Life, Spiritual Disciples of Dallas, and Minister Jason of Bethel AME Church.

Tommye Young West started singing in her father’s church, the late Bishop T.L. Young, at the age of 5. West’s professional career began in 1970, as a secular artist with a hit single, “Do You Still Feel The Same Way,” that sold over 500,000 units. In 1978, she sang on the soundtrack for the NBC television special, “A Woman Called Moses,” starring Cicely Tyson. West also performed on the “Dinah Shore Show,” sang back-up vocals for Doc Severson on his “Night Journey” album, and has been a featured soloist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. She has performed numerous radio commercials.

Gospel recordings include “The Jordan River,” “Just Call Me Tommye,” “Believe,” “Patriotic Medley” (dedicated to the victims of Sept. 11), “Now Is The Time,” “You Promised Me” and “Created to Worship.” In 2002, she was a featured artist on Bishop T.D. Jakes’ release, “A Wing And A Prayer,” and was also featured on the Georgia Mass Choir’s live recording “I Owe You The Praise.”

West has worked with many renowned gospel and secular artists including Stevie Wonder, D.J. Rogers, God’s Property, Douglas Miller, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Dr. Vernard Johnson, Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, Kim Burrell, the late O’Landa Draper, Take Six, Beverly Crawford, Al Green, Daryl Coley, and Edwin Hawkins. She has also had major roles in seven gospel plays, two of which toured nationally.

Over the years, she has received many awards for her work in gospel music. In 1992, at the Texas Republican Convention, West was featured in a performance prior to the address of the former first lady, Barbara Bush.

Among her many awards, West was voted Artist of the Year by the Texas Gospel Announcers Guild in 1991 and 2001. In 1993, she was voted the Female Artist of the Year and in 2001 was voted Female Vocalist of the Year by the Texas Gospel Music Association.

You are invited to attend Praise in the Park and be blessed by the exciting, challenging and anointed music of Tommye Young West.
