‘Smack Down’ newest addition to Derrick Days

From Staff Reports

Teams of five, a big mud pit, and a long, long rope.

What could be more fun?

It’s one of the activities coming to the 2010 Derrick Days Celebration slated for April 24 on the streets of downtown Corsicana.

“Smack Down Corsicana,” sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, will feature teams of five competing in three events — the traditional Derrick Days bed races, arm wrestling, and a Tug of War, complete with a mud pit for the losers to fall in.

Derrick Days planners have been meeting monthly since the fall planning for the celebration. Traditional activities of the event will still be front-and-center on the last Saturday of April, including a chili and barbecue cookoff at the old Stewart Motors building, arts and crafts and food booths, the Oil Town Mini-thon, and the popular Shakers and Srapers Classic Car Show that has grown steadily through the last several years. A pancake breakfast and parade will again start the day downtown, while the Mini-thon will race through Community Park.

VOICE, INC. will also hold its spring “Lunch-On” at the Cook Center on the Thursday preceding the downtown celebration, featuring comedienne and motivational speaker Kelly Swanson. VOICE will also co-sponsor a “Mystery Art Show” at the Warehouse Living Arts Center at 5:30 p.m. April 22, said Gina Dieterichs of the organization.

Friday, April 23, will bring a downtown street dance with entertainment by Johnny Bush and Jesse Dayton, featuring a tribute to Corsicana’s Lefty Frizzell. The Shakers and Scrapers Car Club is also planning a “cruise-in” of some of the classic cars during the street dance.

Berry Chrysler Dodge will operate a shuttle service between the downtown Visitor’s Center and hotels in the city. Paul Tannehill made the announcement at Tuesday’s meeting. Once-hourly shuttles will transport visitors from hotel rooms to the downtown activities. Tannehill said a rodeo also sponsored by the dealership will be held April 17 and 18 at the Youth Exposition as a “kickoff” to the Derrick Days celebration.

Plans are also underway for a fund-raising Derrick Days Golf Tournament this year, scheduled for Friday, April 2, at the Corsicana Country Club, and a “Jubilee Bake-Off” cooking competition is being organized to involve more people in the downtown activities on Saturday.

The Derrick Days committee is set to meet again at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Chamber of Commerce. More information on the event is available at the Corsicana Visitor’s Center, and at the event’s Web site, www.derrickdays.com.
