Corsicana — Colonial Dames

The Thomas Meredith Chapter of Colonial Dames will attend the Kinsloe House program on family roots at noon, Feb. 2, at the Kinsloe House. Members who need reservations, may call Gelene Simpson by Friday at (254) 578-1656.



Dawson Garden Club

The Dawson Garden Club met on Oct. 5, to plant bulbs in the City Parks.

The Garden Club met on Nov. 11, to host a Veteran’s luncheon at the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church in Dawson. Entertainment was provided by the family of the Club President, Deborah Sawyer.



Dawson Lions Club

The Dawson Lions celebrated the Christmas season at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10, in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church in Dawson. The arrangements were made by a special committee which provided the meal and serving dishes, table settings, and decorations.



James Blair Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution

James Blair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will have their Annual Awards Ceremony, to be held at the Feb. 9, at the DAR meeting.

On Jan. 12, at the delightful Colonial Women's Style Show program, which displayed beautiful clothing designed by Carolyn Schiewe and modeled by members of the Captain Molly Corbin Chapter of Grapevine, James Blair Chapter members commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the Junior Membership of the National Daughters of The American Revolution. Eight members who are currently listed Junior Members are Ellen Suzanne Compton Carter, Ashley Megan Couch, Amanda Michelle Earl, Lillian Ann Fuller, Robbie Jo Horvath, Amanda Jo Muldner, Annat Caryl Rawlins Walthall and Kelsi Leigh Williams. Ashley Megan Couch was chosen as honored Junior Member of James Blair Chapter for 20 I 0-20 11. Through the years the following members joined James Blair Chapter as Junior Members: Leslie Om Alli, Donna Everett Ingham, Sarah Clower Keathley, Laura Jean Cox Love, Katherine Anne McNutt, Hazle Irene Shell Mitchell, Anne Warrick De Loach Shelton and Elizabeth Wheelock Dunn Talley. A special display of carnations and colorful cupcakes honored the Junior Members. The cupcake is the symbol chosen for the 75th Anniversary. Junior Members have challenged themselves to raise funds for the OAR Schools, sponsored by the National Society through the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. Hostesses for the January meeting were Merle Slagle and Geneva Davis. Regent Beth Chapman announced that the next OAR meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Feb. 9, at the Kinsloe House and will feature recognition of the American History Essay Winners by Chairman Ruth B. Nelson and recognition of the OAR Good Citizens by Chairman Diane T. Armer. Hostesses for the Feb. 9, meeting will be Virginia P. Ray and Mary Alice N. Hendryx.



Kinsloe House

The Kinsloe House held their First Friday Lunch and were entertained by guest speaker NC Continuing Education Director, Kristen Walker, who spoke about taking classes to learn new things or upgrade a current profession. The next First Friday Lunch will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Feb. 5. This month’s speaker will be CEO of B & B Media Group, Inc., Tina Jacobson, who will present a personal story of her career change and entrepreneurial experience. Working women are urged to share lunch and hear topics of interest to working women on the first Friday of each month. Speakers will cover a variety of topics, such as balancing life at work and home, understanding your employee benefits, what you need to know about wills and estate planning, furthering your education, managing multiple priorities, finance and tax information and personal stories from women just like you. If you are currently in the workforce, looking to change careers, or retired, come and enjoy this hour of fun and fellowship. Membership in Kinsloe House is not required. The price of the lunch is $10. The deadline is 5 p.m. on Feb. 2, and reservations can be made by calling (903) 874-5791.



Literary Club

The Literary Club of Corsicana meets the third Thursday of each month at Kinsloe House. They will have their next meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 17. The program is going to be “Rebel Rose, The Story of A Confederate Spy,” by Ishbel Ross, and will be presented by Geneva Davis. Hostesses for the day will be Edna Richardson and Gelene Simpson.



MAAG

The Methodist Active Adult Group, also known as MAAG, will gather at the First United Methodist Church of Ennis for a lunch, fellowship, and a special program at 11:30 a.m. on, Feb. The Ennis Chief of Police, John Erisman, will be in charge of the special program. He aims to do all he can to help persons like the MAAG to be better protected from the criminal elements of the world. Mark the date on the calendar, invite a guest, prepare a favorite dish and go on down for a lunch with friends and hear the Chief of Police speak. Navarro County Republican Women

The Navarro County Republican Women will meet at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, for social hour with a lunch meeting from noon to 1 p.m., at the Republican Headquarters, located at 111-B W. Third Ave., in Corsicana. They are honored to have as guest speaker, Mel Birdwell, wife of Texas Senator Brian Birdwell. She will review the book that she and Senator Birdwell wrote together entitled "Refined by Fire: A Family's Triumph of Love and Faith." Please join them and hear Mel recount episodes from this amazing book and enjoy a delightful lunch. Member lunches are $7 paid at the door. Guest lunches are free. Newcomer’s Club

The Corsicana Newcomers Club would like to announce that January is a good time to join the club. Dues of $20 paid in January will cover the entire year. The meeting for January will be installation of officers for 2011. Linda Walton will handle the installation. Officers for this year will be President Ellen Block, Vice President and Program Director Jenny Bratton, Treasurer Peggy Clay, Recording Secretary Gloria Hobbs, and Corresponding Secretary Jeannine Grundmeier. Also, Alice Kautz will be in charge of the Lunch Bunch, Peggy Dixson will be in charge of the Roadrunners, and Jane Sanders will handle publicity. The group will meet at Kinsloe House at 11 a.m. on Thursday for social time, and at 11:30 a.m. lunch will be served. The cost is $12 and reservations must be made in advance. The Kinsloe House is located at 618 W. Third Ave., in Corsicana.

PAL of Navarro College

Southern Pacific Sunbeam Club

The Southern Pacific Sunbeam Club is now 18 years old and ready to begin their 19th year with a day of food and fellowship at the Ennis Family Restaurant, located at 2709 S. Kaufman St., in Ennis. The whistle will blow at 11:30 a.m. on  Feb. 1, for working and retired railroaders, their families, friends, and anyone who loves trains. Mark the calendar now for a day of train talk.

    Union High Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fundraiser at 6 p.m. at the fire station on FM 638. The menu consists of fried chicken, macaroni salad, green beans, rolls, tea and dessert, and there will be entertainment following the meal. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.

    The Navarro Generating power plant project is buried in red tape, but it’s not dead.
    Changes by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding Texas air emissions meant the proposed power plant had to do some new air modeling, the results of which were just recently submitted.
