Corsicana —
The Republican Party of Navarro County Executive Committee on Monday nominated Nicole McMahan to fill the Constable Precinct 3 vacancy for the 2012 General Election ballot.
The vacancy on the ballot was created when Brad Butler resigned as Precinct 3 Constable and withdrew his name from the November ballot.
In accordance with Texas Election Code section 145.036, the GOP executive committee named McMahan to replace Butler on the ballot. Butler had defeated McMahan in the May 29 Republican Primary election. There was no Democratic candidate on the primary ballot.
Butler resigned his post after discussions with the Navarro County Commissioners Court over the salary of his office in comparison to other constables. Butler submitted three proposals to the court, each requesting an increase in pay, for various ways he would propose to operate the constable’s office.
Commissioners did not accept any of the proposals, saying they’d like to see Butler perform the duties of the office — serve as bailiff for the JP court and serve papers for the Justice of the Peace — as the county’s other three constables have been doing. Butler then submitted his resignation from the post and withdrew from the ballot.
McMahan was willing to place her name on the November ballot and expressed she will perform the Constable Precinct 3 job if elected, a release from the Navarro County GOP said.
Democratic county chair Eddie Pevehouse said Wednesday she was in discussions with a potential candidate for the Nov. 6 ballot position and expected a decision soon.
County Democratic officials have until Aug. 28 to name a Democratic candidate for the Nov. 6 election.
