Navarro College President speaks at NARFE luncheon
The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1191, held its monthly meeting in Corsicana.
The guest speaker, Dr. Richard Sanchez, President of Navarro College, spoke about the growth and expansion of the college. Since Dr. Sanchez came to Navarro College in 1998, the institution has experienced rapid growth both in expansion of the district and student enrollment which can be attributed to his exceptional leadership. During his administration, Navarro College has earned national acclaim for both its academic and athletic achievements. In 2007, and again in 2010, Navarro College was recognized as one of the nation’s fastest-growing public two-year colleges by Community College Week. In the Fall 2011, enrollment reached 10,400 students, an increase of 202% from the time Dr. Sanchez first arrived. Graduation rates have doubled and the number of minority graduates has increased by 164%. The college budget has increased from $19,782,916 to $120,000,000 today.
Dr. Sanchez has been instrumental in the opening of campuses in Mexia, Waxahachie, Midlothian and he sees possible expansion to the Red Oak and Ferris area. Dr. Sanchez emphasized the importance and the positive impact Navarro College has on students and on our local communities. He also shared personal experiences as to what led him to be a successful visionary for the community college. He specifically shared what he best liked about a community college is they never stop talking about “Teaching and Learning.” Dr. Sanchez has announced his impending retirement effective in August 2013. He reminded NARFE members that 15 years ago, as a newly selected President, NARFE invited him as a guest speaker and he shared his vision for the Navarro Community College. Now, 15 years later, he was again invited to speak to NARFE members, and said it was more than gratifying to have served and to report the Navarro College’s successes.

Sunbeam Club plans for reunion
The Southern Pacific Sunbeam Club met at the Ennis I-HOP on Feb. 5, 2013. January and February birthday celebrants were honored as this club began a new year with plans for the upcoming railroad reunion.
The annual railroad reunion is scheduled for April 19 and 20 and will again be held in Ennis. This reunion includes a Friday evening gathering for fun, fellowship, and some great Hobo Stew and cornbread with all the trimmings. Saturday will be another great time of fellowship with a catered barbecue lunch, program and door prizes.
All railroaders who are retired or active and any family members of railroaders are welcomed to attend. Local economy shows signs of growth
Texas’ economy is picking up, and the signs are all around, even in Navarro County.
Texas’ most recent unemployment figures, from April, had the state at 6.4 percent unemployed, this is compared with the national average of 7.6 percent. In addition, state sales tax receipts for May 2013 were nearly 8 percent higher than in May 2012. Sales tax collections have increased for 38 consecutive months, boosted by strong business spending in the oil/natural gas and manufacturing sectors, and to some extent, retail sales, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office. -

City grants tax abatements
The Corsicana City Council granted tax abatements to Guardian Industries and the proposed water park when the group met in regular session Tuesday. Both companies will be given 50 percent abatements for 10 years, and both are proposing sizable investments and the creation of dozens of new jobs.

Former Kerens VFD treasurer arrested for theft
The loss of $2,900 from the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department in May has led to the arrest of the group’s treasurer, Kaell Mullen.
