Remington requests private club status from city council

The Corsicana City Council will consider whether or not to allow the Remington a special use permit to become a private club instead of a restaurant with alcohol service when the group meets in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, 200 N. 12th Street.

In order to be a restaurant with alcohol, an establishment has to have 51 percent of its income from food, and the Remington isn’t able to do that.

Private clubs, such as the Longbranch, are primarily regulated by the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission, not cities. Corsicana can require a $500 application fee and an annual $200 renewal fee for the permit, but it will be up to the TABC to make sure the club operates within state laws, said Corsicana City Manager Connie Standridge.

The Remington, located at 122 W. Third, is the site for concerts, benefits and other forms of entertainment in addition to serving barbecue and beer.

A second SUP has been requested by the substance abuse treatment center office opening up in the former Navarro Mall. The center will offer counseling.

Also on the agenda is a request to change the sign ordinance to allow for placement of a new billboard on Seventh Avenue, and to discuss the goals of the Atmos cities group for the upcoming legislative session.

The council will host a work session to discuss the items on the agenda at 5 p.m., prior to the regular meeting.
