Holiday weekend includes cycle crash, no major fires

Corsicana — If emergency services expected a busy weekend across the county, then some of them got it.

A weekend that amounted to six DWI arrests, a stabbing and two drug arrests, was hailed by DPS, fire department and CPD senior figures as passing peacefully.

Reports from the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office also show the weekend did not go quite to plan. Records from July 1-5 show the NCSO documented three burn ban violations, nine grass fires, two structure fires, one vehicle fire, five calls on fireworks and one further DWI arrest in Angus.

The weekend also involved a motorcycle accident in which two people were seriously injured Sunday near Eureka.

Jack Wayland McClennan Jr., 53, of Corsicana, and passenger Diane Woods, 50, were traveling along Barrow Road shortly after midday when the rear tire lost pressure and blew out on McClennan’s Ultra Classic Harley Davidson.

McClennan and Woods, who were not wearing helmets at the time of the incident, were thrown from the motorcycle.

According to an official report of the incident provided by Highway Patrol, both were taken by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Woods is said to be in critical condition but the conditions of both Woods and McClennan are said to be improving, said Highway Patrol Sergeant Ken Authier.

The highway patrol had all state troopers operating over the weekend in anticipation of heavy traffic. Authier also reported six DWI arrests and two drug-related arrests. In every incident where DWI suspects were stopped, blood tests were taken as a part of the “No Refusal” weekend, Authier said.

“For the fireworks we had extra patrols out and for DWIs we had extra eyes trained for drivers suspected of DWI. The no-refusal publicity really paid off,” Authier said. “For the number of vehicles out, overall it was a good, safe weekend and the weather cooperated.”

Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton reported there had been one domestic incident involving a person being stabbed on Saturday. One person was arrested as a result of the stabbing, but no other major incidents had taken place.

“I know that the July 4 display went very smoothly. The traffic flowed smoothly. We had some short delays for getting people out,” Bratton stated.

“We had a minor domestic related stabbing incident but that is not unusual. It looks like the only really significant incident of note. It looks like we had a fairly quiet, safe July 4 weekend.”

Additional CPD units had been operating over the weekend with eyes trained for any drivers suspected of driving while intoxicated, Bratton confirmed.

The Corsicana Fire Department also had a relatively incident free weekend, said Assistant Fire Chief Ricki Crenshaw. A house fire in Dawson on Friday was the only incident of note. One minor five foot by five foot grassfire was also put out on Monday. No injuries or firework-related incidents were reported.

When the school bell rings today, it will signal for most the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation.
But for Dana Griffin, it will mark the end of his 30-year career teaching ag science at Corsicana High School, the only job he’s had since graduating from college.
Though he is excited about his new horizons, this day will most likely be bittersweet, as 30 years of animals, ag projects, and kids — it’s always been about the kids — draws to a close.
