Hooked on Fishing is one of those fishing tournaments where there’s no pressure.
Sure, there are prizes for biggest fishes, but this particular event, taking place from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the I.O.O.F. Park, is about allowing kids to try their hands at one of the world’s oldest pastimes.
The event is free and children who don’t have their own equipment can borrow rods and reels for the day.
The tournament began as a dual project between Corsicana and the Texas Parks and Wildlife and it was called Kids Fish. Sam McCollum, who competes in professional tournaments, volunteered for the event and enjoyed it. Then he began bringing in extra gear and giving it away.
Registration begins at 7 a.m., with a shot-gun start at 7:30 a.m. Registration will end at 10 a.m., and the last line has to be hauled back in by 11 a.m., with the awards ceremony following that.
Each child must be accompanied by parent or guardian. The event is open to kids and teens 16 years or younger, children must be present to win prizes, no fishing from the bridges, and all fish are catch-and-release.
The categories are bass, catfish, perch and turtles, with prizes for first, second and third in all the categories except turtles. All the fish are returned to the lake following the tournament, but the turtles are available for adoption at the end of the day.

City grants tax abatements

Former Kerens VFD treasurer arrested for theft
The loss of $2,900 from the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department in May has led to the arrest of the group’s treasurer, Kaell Mullen.
Mullen has been charged with theft of more than $1,500 and less than $20,000 by a public servant, a third-degree felony. -
Workshops to be held to review restoration bids
There are three contractor proposals to consider for the proposed restoration of the Navarro County Courthouse, but a decision on the next step in the project is still likely a few weeks away.
Commissioners opened the proposals for the restoration project shortly after the 2 p.m. deadline Tuesday, along with proposals for asbestos abatement in conjunction with the project. -
