Corsicana —
The decision to combine two sections of the work on Seventh Avenue is paying off with faster construction, according to Area Engineer Darwin Myers.
Originally, the state’s plan had been to take the construction work four blocks at a time, but the delays on the first phase inspired the decision to expand the second phase from 20th to 28th streets.
“It was done to try to speed the job,” Myers said. “There has been some. It has sped up this section.”
The job to improve drainage along Texas Highway 31 where it cuts through the heart of Corsicana began July 22, 2011. The first phase involved some enormous water-catchers to be built underneath the roadway, and took nearly a year. The current phase is working on the center of the road, and then the lanes will be shifted to allow for more concrete work until all four lanes are improved. This portion should be completed by May 2013, Myers said.
“Then it still has to go east, from the CVS all the way back to Main Street,” he said.
In the coming days, the hot mix will begin late this week, then concrete paving starting Tuesday or Wednesday.
Drivers should be cautious about the cross-overs, or temporary bridges to allow people to cross the opposite lane because those can change frequently for the road work, Myers said.
“What might have been open yesterday may be closed today,” he said.
Even though the project has caused some angst among local businesses and drivers, the new drainage should have a positive impact, Myers said.
“Having all the drainage underground, and the new culvert at 18th Street will make a good difference,” he said. “It’s already making a difference.”
