Corsicana —
Dressed in sparkling white habits, the women of the Texas Northeast First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ prayed, sang, and moved in the spirit Wednesday evening, mid-way through the group’s annual convention.
This year marks the 57th convention, but the group’s first time in Corsicana.
Carolyn Bishop of Dallas, who attends the Deliverance Chapel Church of God in Christ, said she looks forward to the conventions each year.
“For the fellowship, the spiritual uplifting, the encouragement,” she said. “I get spiritual insights, and I get a chance to visit cities. I don’t mind doing the traveling because I always receive something I can take back and share with others.”
Not only was this Corsicana’s first time hosting the event, it was also the first time for Pia Haynes-Wiliams to preside. She was consecrated into her position as Supervisor of Women in June. At 55, she’s one of the youngest women of her position in the country.
“I’m excited and overwhelmed,” Haynes-Williams said. “I never aspired to anything like this, but when you feel called for a task or assignment you do what you need to do.”
Her message was one of hope to the more than 200 people, both men and women, who gathered Wednesday for services at the Second Mission Baptist Church.
“Although we have issues in life, with jobs and relationships, if we trust God, we won’t be destroyed by them,” she said.
Creola Keeton of Corsicana, a licensed missionary or evangelist, attends the Word of Life Church of God in Christ. She explained that the conventions are a chance to rejuvenate spiritually.
“With the world as wicked as it is, you get an understanding that you have eternal life,” Keeton said.
Being with the other missionaries is strengthening and inspiring, said Elzada Williams who attends Saintsville Church of God in Christ in Dallas.
“Our faith is ignited,” she said.
The convention will continue through Friday evening, with the Bishop J.N. Haynes, jurisdictional prelate and a member of the church’s general board, speaking.

The loss of $2,900 from the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department in May has led to the arrest of the group’s treasurer, Kaell Mullen.
Mullen has been charged with theft of more than $1,500 and less than $20,000 by a public servant, a third-degree felony. -
Workshops to be held to review restoration bids
There are three contractor proposals to consider for the proposed restoration of the Navarro County Courthouse, but a decision on the next step in the project is still likely a few weeks away.
Commissioners opened the proposals for the restoration project shortly after the 2 p.m. deadline Tuesday, along with proposals for asbestos abatement in conjunction with the project. -
