Corsicana — A listing of meetings and events of interest from throughout Navarro County

Jan. 8

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West 7th Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.



The Corsicana Emergency Corps., located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The general public is invited to attend.  Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.  For further information, please call (903) 872-5072.

Jan. 9

The Kinsloe House Membership committee, headed by Arlene Stewart, will present its program on at 12 noon. The membership committee members are Kathryn Corley, Rita Edens, Lynda Green, Kay Hable, Peggy Herod, Jan Noblett, Kay Sharp, Pearl Skewes, and Lana Stites. The program is titled “Showing the Light Through the Stain Glass Windows.” Jan Noblett will provide a historical summary of the 116-year-old windows in the First Methodist Church with a slide presentation of the restoration of these windows as they are removed, reworked, and reinstalled into their original locations. After the program, attending members are invited to walk across to the church to see these windows. Reservations and cancellations must be made by Monday, Jan. 7 at 12 noon by calling (903) 874-5791. This should be a very interesting program to start the new year.



The James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet for its annual Service Committee Chairman Report session at 3 p.m. at the Kinsloe House. Hostesses for the meeting will be Geneva Davis and Mellie Howard.



Registration for free tutoring for Carroll Elementary students will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at Bethel Education Center at 717 East 13th Avenue. Tutoring will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. The instructors are Charles Miller and Dr. Gloria Miller. Big C Jamboree will take place at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Music Hall, 201 South Beaton Street in Corsicana. Featured will be Zanada Schoppert, Chuck Wiginton, Ron Sikes, Joe Honea, Jody Thomas, and Bobby Fluker as MC, along with Fred Hayes, Billy Roy Mitcham and Stan Lawhon. Heritage Oaks Retirement will have a Breast Cancer Benefit for Fran LaCoste from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. selling barbecue sandwich plates for $5, which includes sandwich, chips, drink and a mint. Divorce Care begins at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 510 W. Collin. Divorce Care is a support group that meets for 13 weeks. The cost is $15 for the workbook and child care is provided. Jan. 14

The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold a County Executive Committee meeting at 7 p.m. at the Republican Headquarters at 111-B West Third Avenue in Corsicana. State Republican Executive Committeewoman for Senate District 22, Janet Jackson, will conduct precinct chair training. Elections Administrator Danda Parker will renew Deputy Voter Registrar certificates. A social starts at 6:30 p.m. to salute elected officials, hosted by the Navarro County Republican Women. The Navarro County Branch of the NAACP remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with “A Day of Celebration” to include a rally at Bunert Park at 10 a.m. with guest speaker the Rev. Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Corsicana will sponsor the Sixth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 6 p.m. at the Calvary Worship Center, 1364 North Beaton Street, Gary Johnson, pastor.  Pastor Charles Washington of Haynes Memorial Church of God In Christ of Mexia will be the guest speaker. “ A Day On, Not A Day Off,”  Living the Dream is the theme. Dairy G. Johnson, Sr., is chairman of the event. Co-Sponsors are Evangelist Cathy Douglas, Minister Margret Evans, Penny Liggins, Minister Valerie Horn, and Minister Orlando Williams.     The Corsicana City Council will swear in the new city attorney, and consider requests for money from local charities when the group meets in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers of the Government Center, 200 N. 12th St. The new city attorney will be Kerri Anderson Donica. She ran unopposed for the position, along with Municipal Judge Mike Russell.
