The Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle Lunch and Learn for January will host a three-part dental series by Justin Wright, DDS. Jan. 12

Downtown Corsicana Second Saturday Sidewalk Sale takes place from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m. There will be vendors along Beaton Street selling items and some downtown merchants will be having sales. Also, Shall We Dance at 106 W. 6th Ave. will be having a Health Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

 Big C Jamboree will take place at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Music Hall, 201 South Beaton Street in Corsicana. Featured will be Zanada Schoppert, Chuck Wiginton, Ron Sikes, Joe Honea, Jody Thomas, and Bobby Fluker as MC, along with Fred Hayes, Billy Roy Mitcham and Stan Lawhon. Guest performers will be Betty and Jimmy D. Coker, and Jimmy Young.



Heritage Oaks Retirement will have a Breast Cancer Benefit for Fran LaCoste from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. selling barbecue sandwich plates for $5, which includes sandwich, chips, drink and a mint. Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will hold a monthly packing at 9 a.m. at the Angel Room located at 1020 N. Bus. 45. All ages are welcome to come pack. Please bring the name of a military member serving in harms way with to the packing so we can do a gift box for our military member to start off 2013. Jan. 13

Divorce Care begins at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 510 W. Collin. Divorce Care is a support group that meets for 13 weeks. The cost is $15 for the workbook and child care is provided. The group is led by people who have been through divorce and successfully rebuilt their lives. This group is led by Chuck McElroy. For more information call the church at (903) 872-7473.



Jan. 14

The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold a County Executive Committee meeting at 7 p.m. at the Republican Headquarters at 111-B West Third Avenue in Corsicana. State Republican Executive Committeewoman for Senate District 22, Janet Jackson, will conduct precinct chair training. Elections Administrator Danda Parker will renew Deputy Voter Registrar certificates. A social starts at 6:30 p.m. to salute elected officials, hosted by the Navarro County Republican Women. Kinsloe House’s Constitution and By-Laws committee, headed by Suzanne Smith, will present its program at 12 noon. The membership committee members are Arlene Stewart, Hanna McCleary, Joan Summitt, Rita Edens, and Charlotte Van Buskirk. The musical program will be presented by a talented group of women called “GRACE.”  These women have been singing together for 12 years. The members of the quartette are Sherri Bruce, Luann Lamb, Gayla Gober, and Madelyn Tyler. They perform throughout Navarro County and are a true crowd pleaser. Please make your reservations or cancellations by Monday, Jan. 14 at 12 noon. This is a fine way to start the new year.

American Legion Post 22 will host a fish fry dinner with all the trimmings, including dessert, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the post, 632 N. Beaton St. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children over 5. The Navarro County Branch of the NAACP remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with “A Day of Celebration” to include a rally at Bunert Park at 10 a.m. with guest speaker the Rev. Kenneth Walton Jr., pastor of First Independent Baptist Church. Following will be a march to the MLK Center for an oratory contest at noon. Everyone is welcome to participate. Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Corsicana will sponsor the Sixth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 6 p.m. at the Calvary Worship Center, 1364 North Beaton Street, Gary Johnson, pastor.  Pastor Charles Washington of Haynes Memorial Church of God In Christ of Mexia will be the guest speaker. “ A Day On, Not A Day Off,”  Living the Dream is the theme. Dairy G. Johnson, Sr., is chairman of the event. Co-Sponsors are Evangelist Cathy Douglas, Minister Margret Evans, Penny Liggins, Minister Valerie Horn, and Minister Orlando Williams. Rehearsal dates are January 7, and 14 at the Bethlehem Baptist Church at 7 p.m. The organizers are asking all church choirs to support this effort.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West 7th Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug, 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

    The area remains under a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m. Storms are forming west of Interstate 35, tracking to the east northeast. Winds at C.David Campbell Field are generally between 20 and 30 miles per hour and gusty. No other advisories are in effect at this time. The late afternoon hours remain the best opportunity for tornado activity, with the possibility of large and damaging tornadoes and winds in the forecast through this evening.

    A forecast summary issued this morning says large or long track tornadoes are possible, along with winds in excess of 70 mph, tennis ball to baseball size hail, and winds in excess of 70 mph.

    MOORE, Okla. — Search and rescue crews worked through the night after a monstrous tornado barreled through the Oklahoma City suburbs, demolishing an elementary school and reducing homes to piles of splintered wood. At least 51 people were killed, including at least 20 children, and those numbers were expected to climb, officials said Tuesday.

    MOORE, Okla. — A monstrous tornado at least a half-mile wide roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, flattening entire neighborhoods and destroying an elementary school with a direct blow as children and teachers huddled against winds up to 200 mph. At least 51 people were killed, and officials said the death toll was expected to rise.

  • CISD Trustees table architect proposal, hear bond feedback

    An outpouring of support from CISD teachers, and some advice for the next bond proposal from a local voter took up the public forum portion of Monday’s Corsicana Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting.
    District voters turned down a proposed $54 million bond package in the May 11 school and municipal elections. The bond would have paid for a new campus, security and building upgrades, new technology, baseball field improvements, and a new school administration building.

    Once again, teams from all over Navarro County gathered Friday evening at The Cook Center parking lot after months of fundraising events to see the culmination of their efforts toward cancer research.
    The goal?

    Last week, the 18 members of the Citizens Police Academy came together to shoot guns.
    In a long caravan, they headed out to the police shooting range near the landfill where they were taught about the department’s rifles, pepper guns, and handguns. They were invited to fire the pepper gun, although it only contained harmless powder pellets on that day, and a handgun, both under the watchful eyes of instructors Officer Sean Eggleston and Asst. Chief Ronnie McGaha.
