Dawson Saddle Club, located on State Highway 31, will have its fall series at 2 p.m. Sept. 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 25 and Nov. 8. Gate will open to everyone at 12:30 p.m. Books open at 1 p.m. Events will be cloverleaf, straightaway, flag race, speed, goat slapping and tying, poles and keyhole. Each event will be $5, exhibitions will be $3. Limited to two runs only in cloverleaf, straightaway and poles. Sept. 28

Barry Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All Masons are invited.

Emhouse Community Center will meet at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The program will be about PHI Air Medical and a helicopter will be on display. Refreshments will be served.

A town hall meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave., hosted by Ruby Williams, Precinct 2 City Council member. The topic of the meeting will be branding and positioning the east side residential district. American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Navarro Shriner’s Building, 323 N. Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Kimberly Martinez, executive director of Navarro County Children’s Advocacy Center. Everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Oct. 3

Purdon Volunteer Fire Department will have a spaghetti supper and auction fund-raiser beginning at 5 p.m. Purdon VFD is raising money to help with its cost share of a recent fire truck. You are invited to come see the truck, visit with old friends and help support the Purdon VFD. Donations for the auction accepted all day.

American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Oct. 7

Seasonal flu shots will be given from 10 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Dawson, located at North Fourth and Main streets. There will be no cost for immunizations to Medicare insured with a Medicare card and another ID. Non-Medicare cost will be $25 per vaccine. Sponsored by the church and Dawson Youth at Heart, the shots will be administered by Providence Home Health Care of Waco. National Depression Screening Day will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, 100 N. 12th St. There will be free, anonymous screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and postpartum depression. Opportunity to take self-test, talk with a mental health professional, and to analyze the suicide risk of a friend or family member. Referral to treatment services provided. Oct. 9

Rice High School junior class will have a fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. in the RHS commons preceding the RHS homecoming football game vs. Scurry-Rosser. A chicken fried steak meal with the trimmings, dessert and drinks will be served. The public is invited to attend. Oct. 9-10

American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., invites everyone for its first chili and bean cook-off fund-raiser. Entry fee is $25. Judging will be noon Oct. 10. Come camp out and have fun. You can come by the legion after 2 p.m. and sign up or you can sign up on Oct. 9. After the cook-off there will be a shuffleboard tournament. Sign up will be at 1 p.m. and a $10 entry fee. The 52nd annual Pelham community homecoming will be held. At 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9, there will be a worship service at Brown Chapel AME Church. From 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10 will be Pelham High School Alumni Day “Fun and Frolic.” Ex-students, family and friends are invited to activities at the Pelham Community History Museum which will include food, drinks, games, prizes, jump fun, hay ride, music, Panther Country store, raffle, and museum tours. Bring your lawn chairs. Classes of 1939, 1949 and 1959 will be celebrated. Bring your pictures. Homecoming worship service will be 10:45 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Pelham. Oct. 10

The United States Army Air Force Memorial Park dedication will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Corsicana Municipal Airport with a multi-aircraft flyover. Corsicana Mayor C.L. “Buster” Brown III will welcome everyone with Ben Acock giving the invocation. There will be speakers, presentations, unveiling of the bronze statue and monument, and closing prayer by the Rev. Ed Monk. There will be a hospitality booth with refreshments, museum exhibits, and souvenir pieces to commemorate the day. The public is welcome. Come visit with former cadets, instructors and employees. The 2009 Hangar Dance and Dinner will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Corsicana Municipal Airport. Join in the celebration of the completion and dedication of the United States Army Air Force Memorial Park. Dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Corsicana Swing Orchestra will provide the sounds of the 1940s and other entertainment will be on tap for the evening. The public is invited. Angels of Corsicana will meet at 8 a.m. at 1020 N. Business 45. If you have items to donate for supporting the U.S. troops, please bring to the meeting or you can drop items off at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., after 2 p.m. daily. Everyone’s help is needed for packing for the troops.

A tamale dinner and benefit auction fund-raiser will be held for Jerri Lea (Hodges) Saldivar at 1 p.m. at I.O.O.F. Park. Saldivar, an employee at Lance Inc. (formerly Tom’s Foods), is undergoing chemotherapy treatments at M.D. Anderson and is participating in research medicine for IBC, a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer. Richland Volunteer Fire Department, located on Main Street in Richland, will host a barbecue dinner fund-raiser. Dinner will start at 5 p.m. Entertainment by the 5W Dirty Band will kick-off at 7 p.m. come out and enjoy the cooler weather and have fun.

G.W. Jackson Multicultural Society Inc., supporting the G.W. Jackson Historical Home and Museum, will present jazz and blues saxophonist and vocalist James “Red” Holloway and the James Gilyard Ensemble featuring Cadino “Dino” Newman, son of Corsicana’s very own the late great David “Fathead” Newman, at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, 112 W. Oct. 13

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave., Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with application and dues. Members and guests are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 13, 15, 20 and 22. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. Oct. 17

Chatfield-Tupelo Community Center will hold its annual ice cream social at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to enter a homemade ice cream to be judged. Please have entries turned in at 5:30 p.m. Cost will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under.

Corsicana High School Cheer Clinic will be held for children ages 4 through fifth grade from 1 to 4 p.m. at the CHS gym. Registration will begin at 12:45 p.m.
