Bonner addresses NAACP banquet

Arik Bonner, the first black president of the Navarro/Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, spoke about goals and achievement Saturday, when he addressed the more than 100 guests at the Navarro NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet.
Included in Bonner’s message was encouragement to young people — and exhortations to their parents — that children need to seek lofty goals without any excuses.
“I want them to aspire to be supreme court justices,” Bonner said. “I want them to aspire to be president of the United States.”
Bonner said that poverty, color and other obstacles are not an excuse for not studying, finishing school and achieving their dreams.
“No one has written your destiny for you,” he said.
In addition to his position on the Chamber, Bonner owns a financial services company, called Forty Acres Financial Partners.
The banquet also honored 16 local business, community and spiritual leaders for their contributions to the community. Among the honorees were Charles Williams, Tony Newsome, Mike Jackson, Lee Walker, Dairy Johnson, Darrell Waites, Al Swift, Joseph Johnson, Bob Scott, Ricky Walter and Ross Washington. Also honored were Danny Euell, Jimmy Driver, ,M.R. Smith, Dwight Garrett, and Lee Keeton.
The theme of this year’s banquet was “Celebrating 100 Years: A Quest for Freedom,” recognizing the centennial of the first meeting of what would become the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. This was the second Freedom Banquet since the Navarro County Branch was rechartered.
In a written message to the attendees, President Leonard Dixon urged members to get involved and take the cause to the next level.
“Today we need extraordinary leaders with vision and the wisdom to focus on what really matters,” he wrote.
The Navarro County Branch of the NAACP hosts a Summerfest the first weekend in June, a freedom march in January on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, co-sponsors the Back to School/Stay in School rally, and provides scholarships to both Corsicana High School and Navarro College students.
